Nakhon Kitchen - Thai Food

Look around Singapore today and you know how fortunate we are. We have petty quarrels on where to locate elderly care centres, paying thousands for children's tuition and when it floods, not even a rat had died and where food is aplenty all day long and all year round and food from all around the world are at your door step.

Gone were the days where tze char stalls have chef that can fry their food with "wok hei" or breath of the wok. Not only that, the prices have escalated. So may be you drive around in a hybrid car, plays golf with your hybrid clubs so why don't you search for a hybrid restaurant? My take on a hybrid restaurant lies in the fact that it is a restaurant located in some heartlands and they charge very reasonably - cheaper than restaurants elsewhere and even cheaper than most typical tze char stalls in the vicinity.

I have been wanting to eat here but due to the continuous long queue have never made it until now at this place in Hougang (Kovan).

What you see here is where the queue has just started forming.

The food should be authentic as they displayed the picture of Thai Royalty. Probably the chefs are Thais too. Maybe authentic but catering to local taste.

Decor is sparse and no frills, like travelling on budget airline so you must come with the right expectations.

Kang Kong Belacan - this one is good as it is crunchy.

Tom Yum Soup, a little on the sweet side and I was expecting more Oomph!!

Stuffed chicken wings are quite good.

Fried Bee Hoon is easy to eat and most Thai stalls can do this quite well. This is good as I love bee hoon but the prawns are not crunchy enough.

La La are lovely. This is a good dish but may be seasonal and may not be in the menu all the time.

The Red Ruby is only ok and not sweet but then I have been spoiled by Ying Thai and Than Ying restaurants. I know I should not compare but they should have thinner skins around the water chestnut.

How much did I pay for a meal for two? $36. Most dishes are from $6-$8. The slightly more expensive ones at $12. You can't be wrong so I understood the queue.

So I did it again for more variety and if they have consistency starting with Mango Salad. Appetising.

The usual Pineapple Rice came a bit oily but alright.

I wanted Tom Yum again but this time in clear soup. It is not sour or spicy enough but OK.

Thai fish cake is always nice.

The Tapioca dessert is good. Right texture and not too sweet.

Mango with Glutinous Rice. I love Thai dessert so I can be bias. However, glutinous rice can be a bit too filling after a meal.

If you are looking for a no-frills good meal which is not overpriced and I feel better than most tze char stalls, this is a good option. I paid $43 for the second meal for three persons. No GST and the service is fast, real quick and all in a jiffy. Mai pen rai.
Sabai sabai, that's comfort and contentment. Here's Bird Thongchai:
