H.E.M.

Magnanimity What is magnanimity?  To be  magnanimous  is to be courageously noble in heart and mind. So it means you have to have courage and nobility, not just in the heart but also the mind. To discuss it all would probably take some five volumes of books, one title for each subject. In the last few years, I have written many articles about how Singapore can be better and the issues at hand, how we treat foreigners and that include domestic helpers and labourers not just expatriates and PRs, problems with making babies, consumerism and materialism, our pressure cooker situation, education system where people are just focus on results and everyone all stressed out, our bad driving habits, the ugly Singaporean, why children should just enjoy their childhood, why we must be a gracious society, etc. and they are sprinkled all over in various articles. I have also published a series on the values that Singaporeans yearned to have. So when the PM spoke about ...

Sincerity

Just like honesty is an absolute, so is sincerity. There is no more honest or less honest people, just honest or dishonest people just as there are no more sincere or less sincere people, just sincere or insincere people. Agree? Sincere comes from the Latin word sincerus which means clean, pure and sound. It is the quality or condition of being sincere; genuineness , honesty and freedom from duplicity. So what should we value in life? Sincerity, honesty, humility, fidelity and loyalty? To be genuine is to be real not fake while freedom from duplicity means more Batman than Two-Face though Batman wears a mask, haha. There are people who treats wealthier, more powerful people or their bosses very well appearing to be a very nice person but step on and over all others. Why the double standard? Why do you get pissed when a restaurant served a Westerner better but ignored you? What is uttered from the heart alone, will win the hearts of others to your own. - Johann Wolfgang von Goe...

Justice And Fairness

What is justice? Justice is the quality of being just and fair, a conformity in moral rightness in attitude or action, righteousness. The upholding of what is just, in fair treatment and due reward in accordance with standard and honour and of being ethical. Justice is a concept of moral rightness based on equity, law, religion, ethics and rationality. The most contemporary theories of justice advocated that justice is overwhelmingly important. Yet subversion of justice in countries, societies, organisations have been prevalent in human history. Justice could also mean punishment for crime and wrong doing which regulates response to crime proven with evidence and subjected by law. I do like our our system of reformative training in our prisons to return offenders to society a better person. What about the justice of allocation of respect, reward, power and wealth? But justice can differ in history, culture and the person who administer it. Socrates used the parable of the cha...

Principles

Principles are professed or accepted rules of action or conduct like a person of good moral principles. It is a fundamental doctrine. A personal and specific basis of conduct. A person of principle is one with a guiding sense of the requirements and obligations of right conduct. As I have said before, if you are not kind , you can't have empathy.  If you don't have principles, how to be honest?  If you are not grateful, can you have humility? Can one be fair without an open mind? Practise spirituality without exhibiting self control? Will you forgive more easily if you have more spirituality and a greater sense of humour? If you are a grateful person, you will see and appreciate beauty in all things. Curiosity will keep you asking questions in your mind to discover the truths of all these things mentioned and when you have all these, it shall empowered you with tremendous courage come what may.  "It takes more courage to reveal insecurities than to hide them, m...

Self Control

We spoke about values - kindness, humility, honesty, empathy, courage, etc. It is time to discuss self control.  Let me share with you a proverb in Singlish: "Where got fish cat don't eat one?" Then allow me to refer you to a previous article I wrote which is in some way related: http://gforce-guru.blogspot.com/2011/07/is-sexual-prowess-measure-of-real-man.html I am sure you have been following the sex scandal that erupted recently due to the high profile nature of the people involved, a very young prostitute and the carnage that will follow. This kind of things happened everywhere and yet it kept repeating itself. It is the same with people who abused their domestic workers. You read the stories in the papers and then one day you are involved. There are actually a few simple truths to prevent ourselves falling into these traps of life. No.1. Acknowledge that we humans are fallible - from prince to pauper. No.2, There is no secret in this world no matter how disc...

Courage

We have been talking about values and so I have written four and continuing: http://gforce-guru.blogspot.com/2012/03/what-do-you-value.html http://gforce-guru.blogspot.com/2012/03/kindness.html http://gforce-guru.blogspot.com/2012/03/humility.html http://gforce-guru.blogspot.com/2012/03/empathy-and-gratitude.html Quotes What is courage? Courage is the quality of mind or spirit to face danger, fear, or vicisitudes with self-possession, confidence, valour, boldness, resolution and bravery. Courage is reckoned the greatest of all virtues; because, unless a man has that virtue, he has no security in preserving any other - Samuel Johnson. Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear - Ambrose Redmoon. Everyman has his own courage, and is betrayed because he seeks in himself the courage of other persons - Ralph Waldo Emerson. God places the heaviest burden on those who can carry its weight - Regg...

Empathy And Gratitude

Everybody at one time or another complained about their bosses as good bosses and really great leaders are a rare breed. Most people when they become bosses are blind to their own faults. So you get people getting their maids or domestic helpers to wash their cars, some during weekends, some actually have a few cars and others have to have their cars washed  twice a day - before they left for work and after they returned, sometimes late into the night. Then we have people obsessed with clean and clear windows yet their Microsoft version are cluttered and dirty. How many more maids need to fall to their death before something is done? Can the Ministry introduce some laws and enforce them? Can employers do something on their own rather than always waiting for the Government to lead? Can the Town Councils or Estate Management do some periodical cleaning of the facade? I am going to invent "Windows 101" that can slide inwards so that you can do the cleaning inside. When this ...

What Do You Value?

Increasingly in today's world, we have people who know the price of everything but the value of none. So what does it profit a man to gain the whole world but to lose his own soul? What do you value? Appreciation of beauty and excellence, Empathy, Forgiveness, Kindness, Honesty, Curiosity, Spirituality, Energy, Humour, Perseverance, Principle, Hope, Love of Learning, Gratitude, Open-Mindedness, Humility, Courage, Fairness, Justice, Sincerity, Creativity, Self-Control,  etc. In a recent survey, Singaporeans value in order of what values people hold closest to their hearts (on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most important) - (1) 8.92 for Honesty (Truth, Upright and Genuine), (2) 8.55 for Kindness (Benevolent, Compassionate and Helpful), (3) 8.50 for Gratitude (Aware and Appreciate the good things that happen, saying    Thanks), (4) 8.43 for Fairness (Unbiased and Impartial), (5) 8.32 for Forgiveness (Accept Shortcomings of Others, Giving People a Second Chance), (6) ...

Is Sexual Prowess Measure Of A Real Man?

Mozambique beacme the 80th country to hook on. Now I have North America, Latin America, North Continent Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, the African Continent, Middle-East and various others tuning in. When you watch or read Tiger Woods being introduced as the 15th best golfer in the world you would somehow feel strange. At one time, he was unbeatable. All records are waiting for him to break. Everyone who turns up just think of being second best. Not any more. Everyone would die to be living his life. Rich, famous, a beautiful wife and family. Playing golf all day and got paid for while most of us risk our lives doing it. Then Poof!! Sex and cheating. Ashley Cole, probably Chelsea's and England's most consistent performer with a rich and beautiful wife in Cheryl Cole. The scandal was out for a similar issue. Anthony Weiner of New York denied and then later admitted that he sent sexually explicit photographs of himself to women over the Internet. Bill Clinton did somethi...
