Big In Japan - Part I

Image
The Singapore passport is another example of how we are being valued and viewed. It is invaluable.  I savoured a last cold one for the road on a red-eyed flight. The land of the rising sun awaits. I have not been back to Tokyo since more than 10 years ago. Absence makes the heart grow fonder they say. I did a weather check. It was going to be cold. Maybe my eyes were red when I got there as I did not get any real shut eye. A young child was crying nearby where I sat. I decided to watch a movie "The Imitation Game''. It was an interesting movie. I fell asleep after that with intermittent disruption. Arriving Haneda, I wanted to save some dough but when I looked at the sign for train services, I gave up. There must have been at least five service providers and countless lines and stations. Maybe Tokyo/Japan have the world's best train services?  I got to Shimbashi early. It was cold. I left my baggage at the hotel to get a stroll and to find breakfast. Th...

World Cup 2014 - Analysis Of First Matches

After watching many first round matches at ungodly hours, almost all of them save for a few, I must say that the 2014 edition in Brazil promises to be one of the best World Cup for the simple reason that teams have abandoned "park the buses" campaign and actually went for the jugular. Well, this is how soccer should be played isn't it? Why would you rather watch a drab 0-0 match? The most most intriguing stuff the 2014 World Cup has brought is the shaving foam that referees sprayed during a free kick - a small semi-circle around the ball and then a straight line across the feet of players forming a wall. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=738377642871496&set=a.339137702795494.73494.266828596693072&type=1&theater I feel that they should add more to that. They should have a yellow coloured foam to spray on the faces of players penalized for a yellow card offence so that soccer fans could see who is in danger of an impending send off. This will also inf...

Awakening The Giants

Image
When I was young I was very intrigued by stories of giants. Fairy tales have them and they seemed to be at large and aplenty. Giants with three eyes with the third one in the middle. They are huge, very tall - 7 to 10 feet tall, maybe more and they were all strong. You go slay the giant and the King will give consent for the hands of her Princess, not sure if you have a chance to see how the Princess look like before you decide. Do you know the one where the King was willing to give the hands of her beautiful Princess to the man who would fetch him the most ping pong balls? Princes of countries near and far did their best. The first one thought he was successful when he came forth with a hundred only to realise soon the second one came back with a thousand but both started laughing when they saw the third one crawling in all tattered and torn holding only two balls. The King was bemused and enquired: "What happened to you when all I asked was for you to bring back the most ...
