Do you believe in time travel? Most of us are intrigued by time travel from books to movies. How someone could travel to the future to change the past or go back to the past to alter the future and be a hero. Like the action movie "Terminator", a cyborg was sent from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Conor because her unborn son will one day lead the fight against an AI system that will spark a nuclear holocaust. Then there was the romantic movie "Somewhere In Time", where this man got fascinated by a photo of a beautiful actress while he was staying at this hotel where his obsession grew and he travelled back in time through hypnosis to meet her. I don't  know about time travel but I know that with a bit of imagination, we could go anywhere we want and those with plenty of imagination are children as they could imagine anything through play. Adults too can be imaginative if you play a lot when young for it is through play that you discover and learn to be creative. I...

Memory Lane - 2

Nostalgia. People say don't look back to the past. It is over and gone. Look to the future. True, don't cry over spilt milk but the way milk was delivered, the bottle or packaging they came in, the floor on which the milk was spilt - they were different. Things seem to be better but are they really? Remember, the milkman who rode his bicycle with bottles of goat's milk straddled across his two wheelers and the stopper at the bottles' opening were just a rolled up cardboard or paper.   Life was so much simpler just like this optical shop I saw along Balestier Road. Look at its showcases and the mosaic floor. Is life just all about facade? Oh, may be you need air-conditioning, change the floor, recreate the showcase and cabinets. Make the whole place swanky then raise the prices. That is the only formula. To solve problems, just increase prices. Singapore's magic formula. Even people are becoming like that.  At Martaban Road, there was this old coffee sho...

We have done with September and now in October. It is all ...ber...ber...ber all the way. Time to wake up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU9JoFKlaZ0   (Green Day) I think we should all be gardeners and farmers originally. We could have remained that way so while we work we are also doing our exercise. That is why they do not have gyms or have to do weight training nor do they need a treadmill in the old days. Exercise is something that you cannot stop. You have to keep going. Once you stop, it is hard to restart your engine. I know people who love exercises and sports. I also know those who dislike them and are totally not in it. Some of my friends are marathoners. Several of them from the 40s to the 50s are triathletes or Ironman. There were a couple of guys I know who are in the 50s and 60s and they are still playing soccer once to a few times per week. These fellows are seasoned as they have been doing this for the last 30 years.  Do be careful when y...

Reminiscing - 3...Childhood, Youth and the Neighbourhood

When you are a child or in your youth, you wanted to be like the adults, to go out to work and be dispensed with the misery of going to school. Perhaps it's the stifling education system but soon enough when you became an adult, you feel like wanting to be a kid again. Which is why I have always advocated strongly that we should let children be children (not the disciplinary part) but children who could play imaginatively and with wide eye wonderment and even to a certain extent I believe being with nature builds up the creative side and EQ of a person. That's why some people talk to plants. Maybe they are tired of talking to people? Going to the kindergarten was a first real experience of being with complete strangers, like when you first came to primary school, then secondary school, National Service, etc. except that when you were older, you could cope better. I could still remember that just before tea-break as the aroma of Milo filled the air only to find out that w...
