Chef Kang - Wanton Noodle

Image
Chef Kang needs no introduction. His first restaurant was Canton Wok in Havelock, it later moved to Serangoon and Joo Chiat. It was at Serangoon when I first patronised.  Later, he ran a restaurant at McKenzie Road.  Since then I have read that he has weathered bankruptcy after several businesses in China  failed. He even fought cancer and prevailed. Chef Kang is an award-winning chef and now he is even Michelin-starred. I have heard that there is always a snaking queue at his wanton noodle stall at Jackson Square in Toa Payoh with a two-hour waiting time. That freaked me out.  I got to eat it because of special VIP delivery, thanks to my younger sister.I don't even have to order it. Lol. Despite the time taken for the journey and by the time I ate it. It was still good. Firstly, the  Char siew comes  in thicker slices not those of your usual thinly sliced ones. It has a fresh smoky flavour  and are fatty. The chye sim is soft and...

Sometimes, I Don't Know What To Eat!

Image
Do you experience this problem sometimes? It is meal time, you go to a food place, walk around and you just don't know what to eat. The food are very much the same despite the variety. In part, it is due to commercialisation of simple hawker food fare to the quality and standard of taste. At times, I asked if we are running out of ideas. So in a dilemma, it is better the devil you know then the devil you don't. It was my mum who introduced and made me French toast. Bread soaked in egg then fried = French toast. You can add cinnamon, spread it with maple syrup, brown sugar or kaya. My wife helps me with it these days. The other day, a boy was asking the auntie at the coffee shop why his French toast has no kaya. The auntie replied: "Aiyoh! Ah boy, don't you know? We are saving Gaia!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Jt6TJomo8g Walking around on a hot and humid day gives us a dress rehearsal of the fury of hell. You can hallucinate about being in the N...

"Go To" Food

Image
Recently I had a fetish. All of us need a "go to" place, some for food, others to a pub and in golf there will be days where nothing seems to work and you will need a "go to" club, a club that works even on a bad day, something you can rely on like a good old friend. Even in soccer, you have those "go to" players. When things are against you, when the chips are down, put in the "go to" players.  My "go to" food most recently has been "Sa Bo Fan". It's not a sabo fan but clay pot rice.  I know of popular ones at Beach Road and Chinatown but I wanted them somewhere nearer to home and I found two places that served pretty good stuffs - one at Kovan and the other at Hougang.  Good Chinese sausages, tender chicken, wee bits of salted fish and a great dark soy sauce with intense heat are important. It is easy to eat, simple and delicious.  Because I had clay pot rice and I saw someone ordered the "sesam...
