EPL 2019/20 - Game Week 38

Liverpool FC are the undisputed champions of the English Premier League (2019/2020) season! Coming in as well to be the winner of the Champions League, Champions of Europe (Super Cup) and Champions of the World (World Club Cup)! It is even more momentous when you consider that the Reds last won it 30 years ago and this one was halted for awhile by a grave and dangerous pandemic. Liverpool are now 18 points ahead of 2nd placed City with one game left. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAixsyx70AM  (Champions of England) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xbcSnwCa-w  (We Are The Champions) There will be haters that scoff at the 30 year gap that they last won the title forgetting the history of the multiple champions and Kings of Europe  but history are but a thing of the past. It got harder in the modern era of money soccer. Where others just bought the best players from around the world, Liverpool bought only where they needed. Neither Allison Becker or Virgil Van Dijk were the best

EPL 2019/20 - Game Week 37

You woke up to the news that Manchester City's original two-year ban from the Champions League has now been reduced to a fine. What does it tell us? I am happy that a team like City could be playing in Europe and also if they were to play only in the EPL with such a deep and excellent squad with limitless dollar to buy more star then the EPL title is as good as theirs. Playing in Europe will make things on a more level playing field. Haha, level playing field is an important term in soccer and even politics as in life. I mean, if your goal posts you are protecting is so huge and your opponents' so small, even if the field is level you will still end up poorer. So is there still fair play now given that revised decision? Disgraceful? How will other clubs now treat fairplay? Meanwhile, other than challenging for third and fourth, who do you think are going down other than Norwich's confirmed case? I like Norwich. They were very good in the lower division the previous sea

EPL 2019/20 - Game Week 36

Just three more matches and the season is over. Game Week 35 threw out some expected and unexpected results beginning with the Hammers' 4-0 away win over Norwich. I expected the Hammers to win but not by 4-0 and nobody would have expected Antonio to score 4 times. Must be surely the first time in a long while someone got 4 in match match. Michail Antonio is strong, fast and powerful. He just needed the right chance created. Newcastle started very well but could not survive Watford's two penalty goals 30 minutes apart and lost 1-2.  Liverpool had 71% possession, took 23 shots to Burnley's 6, created 19 chances but ended 1-1. Burnley played well especially the heroics of their goalkeeper Nick Pope. This man should be playing for England and give Jordan Pickford more than a run for the money. Andy Robertson scored a brilliant headed goal but he should have been awarded a penalty but the referee didn't even use VAR. Burnley's goal was also offside but it was awarde

I have Jamie Vardy in my Fantasy Football League team for quite a long period of time and has been and still is leading the goal-scorer chart. Then he hit a barren spell and was without a goal in several games so I sold him and the very next game against Crystal Palace he hit a brace and followed that up with another late goal away to Arsenal. Vardy's rise from nowhere is one of the most interesting ever and do you ever forget his magnificent back heel goal for England against Germany. At the time, Manuel Neuer was considered the best goalkeeper in the world. Harry Kane got a very good goal too in the match.  Take a look at it as it was his first England goal. What a goal it was! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCvPPGY8aUY  (Vardy goal v Germany). Right now, the rest are fighting for Champions League and Europa qualification or avoiding the dreaded drop but who are the leading scorers now? (1) Jamie Vardy (Leicester ) - 22 goals (2) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal

Five more matches left and the season will be over. Somehow soccer matches without the fans is like an election without the rallies. Few more days and the election fever would be over. Thankfully EPL plays out on a yearly season and while the World Cup takes four years, the Election takes up to five years. They should have an election every year so that we can have something to look forward to, have an extra day of public holiday and if the MPs are no good, we can change them. One year is good enough for probation, promotion and relegation. We can also look forward to new talents as in soccer's new signings, etc. Some become stars like a duck to water. Others fail and become anonymous only to fade away.  Liverpool were lacklustre but won 2-0 at Villa Park and when City sunk to a shocker at Southampton 0-1, Champions Liverpool  now lead by 23 points. Jamie Vardy shot up the goal-scorers chart with a brace against Palace in a strong 3-0 win. The Red Devils showed fight and purpo

EPL 2019/20 - Game Week 33

I was brought up on English soccer. As a little boy growing up in old but very young Singapore, you are considered lucky if you even owned a small TV shared by a large family. Others could only rely on the community centres. We only have black and white television and I remembered you probably get to watch some wrestling and weekend soccer highlights of the previous week. Back then in the 70s and only from 1974, along came colour TV and the weekly football highlights  was called "Star Soccer".  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWYHmH-d-08  (Star Soccer). And then the F.A. Cup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk1xPkOm978 Later in May 1974, I got to watch Star Soccer at our National Stadium at Kallang. Coventry City, Derby County and Everton participated. Then, Coventry was led by managers Joe Mercer and Gordon Milne who was a former England and Liverpool player. Coventry had a star goalkeeper at the time in Bill Glazier with a front-line led by David Cross and
