Humility

After discussing what we value:

We moved on to talk about kindness:

We should go on to expound the intricacies of each of these values starting with humility. Simply put, when one has his values right, the whole world can change but your values will not. This will put us in good stead, come what may.

Humility - There are too many things to say about humility. It is simpler to say what is not part of humility. If you think that you are God's gift to mankind, that is not humility. Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. There are not many folks who possess it and the man who possesses it is a blessed man and someone in great demand in all areas of life especially valued by friends and associates.

What is not part of humility? Aggressiveness, vanity, boastfulness and arrogance for example. If you can at any time go more than half the way to meet the needs of others, you have humility. Do you? Or do you manipulate others. Why don't you motivate instead of manipulate?

You may be born clever or have a gift such as natural flair for soccer, music or whatever but humility is not a gift. You may be influenced by your family and parents' upbringing, spirituality or reading but humility is harnessed through a deep understanding and profound knowledge and experience of life such that you do not just see with your eyes but also see, feel and sense with your heart. It is a quality developed but not easily attained and consciously chosen as your modus operandi.

Humility is the quality of being modest and respectful regardless of your background. Even the lowly, weak and poor have their stories to tell and things we can learn from. It is a condition of being humble. It is a virtue in many religions and is always in unity and harmony with the universe. Humility is about being ego-less. Many people on planet Earth are simply not happy with things or have relationship problems because of their ego. When you impose on your children to do things they don't need or don't like to do but you insist on it that is probably your ego at play. Some young children are like Jose Mourinho - they just don't like to loose. That is ego in play.

Many powerful, rich, famous and successful people are full of ego too. Even those with none of the above have ego. Some people are just full of ego and when they become a manager at work, their ego keeps soaring and they become a different person! It is a result of pride. Nobody no matter how smart can lay claim to know everything and is capable of all things. Humility cannot reside in people's heart if they are full of themselves and their ego. You can't have both together. One cannot be humble and yet be egoistic. I'll talk about ego some other time.

In Buddhism, humility is about liberation from life's sufferings and the human mind's vexation. Humility can be achieved from the liberation of Nirvana. When one experience emptiness and non-self, one is free from vexations and suffering, it is taught.

In Christianity, a person who considers his own defects and has a humble opinion of himself and willingly submits himself to God has humility. "God opposes the proud but gives grace (show favour) to the humble" - Proverbs 3: 34, ! Peter 5:5, James 4:6. It must be so important that it had to repeated three times, probably more. Recognizing talents and virtues of others, appreciating them even if they were better than you, giving them due rewards and honour. Knowing one's own limit and not going beyond your own grasp is humility.

As I mentioned before, a person develops a big ego because of his pride. Therefore, humility gives one wisdom and honour. The wisest people are humble and the humblest people are wise.

Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. - Matthew 5: 5-9. All these qualities are part of humility.

Better is a dish of vegetables where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it. -Proverbs 15: 17. Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice. - Proverbs 16: 8. It is better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud. - Proverbs 16: 19. Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than who takes a city. - Proverbs 16: 32. Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting with strife. - Proverbs 17: 1.

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know  what a day may bring forth. Let another praise you and not your own mouth; someone else and not your own lips. - Proverbs 27: 1-2. When pride comes, then comes dishonour but with the humble is wisdom. The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the falseness of the treacherous will destroy them. - Proverbs 11: 2-3. Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth, honour and life. - Proverbs 22:4)

Why do people pay $1,000 to hear a motivational speakers speak? Or buy all kinds of books on self-improvement? You do not need to be a Christian or a religious person to just go on and read the book of Proverbs where you will find all the wisdom that you need. How spouses should treat one another, how parents should teach their children, how children should treat their parents, how you should behave, conduct oneself and treat one another, etc. It is free! Log on to the link and read through Proverbs. When you have finished, do it again and where needed yet again until the words reside in your heart. Keep referencing it till it becomes second nature.

Humility is to put others before self. Humility helps us to make correct estimation of ourselves as most time people overate themselves. Many out there wish to be rich, successful, powerful and famous but few knew how to be humble. Often, we are equally capable of being self-righteous with a holier than thou attitude.

Whoever sets himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods. - Albet Einstein.

You know more than you think you know, just as you know less than you want to know - Oscar Wilde.

To be humble to superiors is duty, to equals courtesy, to inferiors nobleness - Benjamin Franklin.

To become truly great, one has to stand with people, not above them - Charles de Montesquieu.

If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants - Isaac Newton.

Our best thoughts come from others - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Humility is the foundation of all other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there, there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance - Saint Augustine.

Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real - Thomas Merton.

It wasn't until quite late in life that I discovered how easy it is to say "I don't know" - Somerset Maughan.

It is not titles that honour men but men that honour titles - Niccolo Michiavelli.

None are so empty as those who are full of themselves - Benjamin Whichcote.

If every fool wore a crown, we should all be kings - Welsh Proverb.

The worst things in the world are the same stuffs as you just as the best things in the world are. Our own great knowledge of things should give us the wisdom that the depth of our ignorance is even greater. So be humble. Inject yourself with doses of humility each day. Humility is the freedom from thinking about yourself. It is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities without your help. Modesty is all about allowing others the endearing discovery of how wonderful you are.

You are definitely a cock, if you thought the sun has risen to hear you crow. Hahaha. ROFL! I hope you are humbled by this article from a glow worm.
