China Square And Far East Square

I used to be all wide eyed as a child whenever I came to town. You have to understand that the biggest shopping centres those days were Robinsons at Raffles Place, Metro at High Street and CK Tang. Dad used to work at Denmark House, so on some occasions he would bring us to Change Alley. Wow! They sell everything there from fishing rods to chendol.

I started work at LKN Building at Cecil Street and believe you me, the back lanes between buildings were where we had our lunch or we would sometimes go over to Lau Pa Sat, Raffles Place or Fullerton. It was like bright eyes big city and I was like a country bumpkin. Most people started out humbly but few remain truly humble in more than 30 years of meeting hundreds and thousands of working and business people.

Like buildings, some people walked in others walked out. Some just faded away and faded from your memory. Some new buildings or upgraded ones like Change Alley and Lau Pa Sat just look newer and more modern but like some people they have changed and now completely lack character. Walking through these places can be nostalgic for me as it is a walk down Memory Lane. I am reminiscing. The facade of Singapore is changing so rapidly just like the facade of some Singaporeans I may have trouble coping and recognising them.

This time, I went down to China Square and Far East Square on a laid back Sunday afternoon. We headed straight to Zhou's Kitchen at Far East Square for their weekend Dim Sum Buffet who is not related to Warren. For $20.80 ++ (minimum 4 persons) you get to eat all you can. Be warned! I saw that they have 42 food items to choose from.

For example we had black pepper beef.

A good beef like this must be well seared.

The Drunken Chicken is unique. Just wondering if the chicken was drunk before or after.
Especially good was the Garlic Pork. It was like you can't stop eating it.

There is Ginseng Soup to perk it up for the rest of the day.

The Fried Mee Sua stood out for me. Each strand of noodle was consistent.

There were many others but how much could a person eat without abusing oneself? So just finished off with a dessert. I picked a Mango/Pamelo with Sago.

We took a stroll in the vicinity and there is a lovely courtyard with a fountain.

When we got to China Square, I found that there are many interesting shops here. Perhaps some of them came over from Clarke Quay previously. "Very Cool Stuff" have so many types of toys and comics of days gone by. Cool. Need to relive your childhood?

Another interesting check for you is "Toy Realm".

Around the lobby, there is this stall selling old telephones helmed by a young and friendly couple. Some of you younger people may never have seen a phone like that.

This lovely wall and the statue of three young children playing a game of "capteh" from a time even way before my time.

How quickly the times they are a-changing. The problem with partaking in buffets is that you can get injured while eating. Have a nice weekend!
