Humour

We have been talking about values and one of them is humour. Some folks may say that they were born shy but there is no such thing. You were born naked not shy. What about humour? Anyone born with a sense of humour? Most folks do have some sense of  humour but they differ in many ways but as people grew older they will lose more and more of it as the serious business of life overwhelmed them. Some may even be disillusioned. Having a sense of humour is an absolutely important trait to have in the human species and must be made an integral part of our life failing which misery could be the dominant factor.

When you were born, your life was absolutely threatened. At the wrong time and place, you could have been aborted! In the womb, other threats were prevalent. When delivered, all kinds of viruses and bacteria threatened you. You made it but throughout life, all kinds of threats wanted a piece of your scalp. These are no laughing matter, not a joke and not funny and yet precisely why we need humour and lots of it.

You would have watched countless episodes of cartoons, read tonnes of comics and revelled in the comedies. From Jerry Lewis to Jim Carrey, Michael Hui to Stephen Chow and laughed till your tummy hurts but how many of you can actually laugh at yourself?

Before one can love others, one has to accept and love oneself first then you can give of yourself to others. Many would know how to love their wife, children, parents and friends but how many could extend and show respect and love for other's children, parents and friends? I left out the wife because you should love only your own wife.  It is the same as humour. There are many who likes to laugh at others and yet when others laugh at them, they feel offended. Are you one of them? If so, then train yourself in self-deprecating humour. Learn to laugh at yourself. If you can do that, no one can take the Mickey out of you then you can grow from strength to strength. For life is full of uncertainties, twists and turns and humour like soup for your soul is the only thing that may save you other than Jesus Christ. Nobody and nothing else will. If you have  a sense of humour even if wicked, you are blessed.

So what is humour? Humour is particular cognitive experiences to provide laughter and amusement. Ancient Greeks learned that balance of fluids in our human body control our emotions and therefore, health. We people regardless of race, language or religion, young and old, male and female across all cultures and countries respond to humour. It is an ability to smile at, laugh or amused by something that is funny and that is what we call a sense of humour. Humour is simply the quality of being funny.

In every stage of life, on any issue, no matter how serious, it is always possible to see the lighter side of things for there is always a funny, humorous angle to it. Comic situations are prevalent everywhere, every time and beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Of course, you do not go to a funeral and break out in guffaws but in most cases, we must learn to laugh and see the funny side of things.

Very often, we take ourselves too seriously. We like to watch people poking fun of one another even if slapstick. Our very own comedians of old like "Wang Sar: and "Ye Fong" and "Hamid Bond".

There are times where people from another country or race who may not like you to joke about them but it is more acceptable if they joke about themselves. Even so, some may take offence. Watch Russell Peters:

Laughing and having a sense of humour release positive chemicals in your body that makes one feels good. It is a ice-breaker on any occasion - anytime, anywhere. Women like guys with a great sense of humour and so do guys. For that matter, anyone. People who have a great sense of humour particularly those who provide it with originality are classy people. It showcases their deep understanding of life and their ability to make sense and light of things. Lightening shows you have a good grasp of life at all times.

Humour is a rubber sword. It allows you to make a point without drawing blood. - Mary Hirsch.

The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating......and you finish off as an orgasm. - George Carlin.

Humour is mankind's greatest blessing. - Mark Twain.

It takes only one drink to get me drunk. The trouble is I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth. - George Burns.

Humour is the great thing, the saving thing. The moment it crops up, all our irritation and resentments slip away and a sunny spirit takes their place. - Mark Twain.

A sense of humour...is needed armour. Joy in one's heart and some laughter on one's lips is a sign that the person deep down has a pretty good grasp of life. - Hugh Sidney.

Good humour is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment. - Greenville Kleisser.

Humour is a reminder that no matter how high the throne one sits on, one sits on one's bottom. - Taki.

Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humour to console him for what he is. - Francis Bacon.

Humour results when society says you can't scratch certain things in public, but they itch in public. - Tom Walsh.

The satirist shoots to kill while the humourist brings his prey back alive and eventually releases him again for another chance. - Peter De Vries.

Nothing is more curious than the almost savage hostility that humour excites in those who lack it. - George Saintsbury.

So halt, take heed and begin to see the lighter side of life. If you look at the front page of newspapers they are all bad news. So I normally read from the back pages. Even the back pages can be depressing when your favourite players or teams lose. So, peeps, look for funny things at all times. Amuse yourself for laughter is truly the best medicine! For a person with self-worth does not take offence easily. You just laugh it off like water on a duck's back.
