Cari Makan Again

Korean food like its K-Pop culture is fast gaining acceptance and a foothold here. Even many food centre will have one with Korean food. Except for one that used to be at the Amara Hotel, most of the beef, saba and Kim Chi are to me not quite up to standard.

Even the restaurants standards differ. At Han Sang at Novena, even the quality of their set lunch actually sets the standard right from the appetizers.

And their Kim Chi is really good.

Bibimbab is a sort of signature Korean dish of mixed rice, a mixture of steamed white rice, egg, beef, vegetables and you just stir them up.

Or stir up your tummy  with the spicy ramen. Talking about Korean lunch, I thought that New Dear Leader Kim Jong Un was telling his Generals about lunch at Wild Rockets or something and they heard wrongly and went to launch the rocket. There are good and bad politics and he should have taken the opportunity for change rather than to launch a limp rocket when his people needed food and medicine.

Meanwhile, here is what appears to be the only newscaster in North Korea Ri Chun-hee talking about my blog and asking you to nominate my blog for the Singapore Blog Awards (watch at 10:20).

Translation: This is good stuff and all people in North Korea and the world should read this blog. Nominate and vote for him! That's all I can say with my limited knowledge of Korean. Okay, I had better stop here or they may launch a rocket here searching for me if they read this.

The Japanese Enoki and Beef Rolls at Sushi Tei are always a delight. You are not going to be there without savouring it. Do not be ashamed. Slurp it all up.

Actually fried bee hoon (vermicelli) is a good kick start to the morning. Man of us kind of grew up on this. Again, it is hard to find good ones these days and this good at the market near the office has a long queue. So I get to eat it if I were there and saw a break in pattern of the queue. Just throw in a simple "hor pau tan" or luncheon meat with lots of chili.

So too the good old "chee cheong fun".

The Japanese Katsudon is a simple and yet delightful meal to have. Rice in a bowl topped with deep fried pork cutlet, egg, condiments and drenched in a sauce (the sauce can be different).

Have them both together including this Japanese salad. So good!

Recently, I met Rafi at Amoy Street again. He was delighted and shared with me that he would be going to Shanghai and from time to time various places to showcase Singapore food. He is a master with the teh tarik and always attracts people especially foreigners. Good luck Rafi!

While at Pura Vida one day, we got hungry and Haree who runs the pub helped to order this "wanton" noodle. Wanton is shrimp dumpling  not immoral. It was not fantastic but the noodle texture and the power chili was truly immoral! I feel a need to try it again some day and need "kakis" (friends) so that it will be delivered when we order some. Haree, please open your place earlier for lunch then you can go home early too.

Pow Sing at Serangoon Garden is an old name.

You can have a lavish meal here or just order the simple ones and it will not cost a bomb. The tofu for example is quite melt in the mouth.

They are also popular with their chicken rice.

Of course the typical Nonya "chap chai". My maternal grandma and mum make it best. The gravy is important. You can mix this with your rice and it is sufficient to power your meal all by itself. Let me share a trick and tip for you if you do not already know. Splash some belacan to go along with it and you will be craving for more.

The Har Cheong Kai or prawn paste chicken is golden brown and very good.

I'll stop you from drooling now. Have a great weekend!
