Of Trays And Trash
I read somewhere some people were saying that because they have paid for their food and that should have included the price of trays being cleared and tables cleaned by the cleaners. If this was the main concern of these people they are missing the trees for the woods, again knowing the price of everything but the value of none.
These people should go to a place for where they do it all for you! If you remember the advert jingle. When you sh*t, who cleans your backside? If you have to clean your own backside, why can't you clear your own trays? I cannot believe that a Singapore that can have the best airport, seaport and everything else that is top notch is unable to solve a simple thing like this. Worst, all the new and shiny stuffs in our country seems artificial if we can't even think straight. How do we eat out? Spit everything on the tables? Would you do the same at home? Why are your home toilets clean and the public ones stinky?
The problem is when we get too commercialised. In other words, everybody just wanted to make more money at every single opportunity. That is the beginning of every problem. Retail rentals are too high. Food court operators may not be employing sufficient cleaners. I am not bothered that I need to clear my own trays as I have done it many times but when we return the trays, there are two problems - there is no designated place for tray returns and when many do it at the same time plus the lack of a proper place, the cleaners some of whom are aged face even more pressure. So common sense tells us we need a place designated for tray return.
I will only accept to return the trays/utensils that I used to a designated place provided we can get an assurance from the authorities and the food court operators that they will not cut any jobs as many of these people especially the old folks need the job. Anyone who has been to Ikea knew they have a good system for trays that can be placed on trolleys so you can pushed them back to a station for the cleaners to take care of them. Would that cost an arm and a leg? Obviously not. If you can do that at Ikea why can't you at a food court?
Whatever has happened to Singapore? We survived on mass tin during National Service. Should we introduce the mass tin system at our food courts? Well, at least they are easy to stack. All we need is the relevant authorities to take the lead to co-ordinate. If we can't solve this problem, we should really be ashamed of ourselves.
Do you think that washing dishes, cleaning tables and clearing trays is an easy job? Go try do it yourself. Have we grown too big for ourselves? From where we are, it may be difficult to fathom that one day we could be cleaning tables and clearing trays. When you sit down and eat, watch and observe, don't just gobble. If we just gobble then we are just globins. All parties should think for the cleaners. Good luck.
