Best Balls!

Someone from Serbia has come on the first time and I welcome you and more to visit. You are the 61st country. I wish Changi International Airport would put a big advert with me to welcome visitors, perhaps some lucky ones will get a free trip here and welcomed with lion dance on arrival.

Despite showing it before, some folks do not believe that a golf ball is compressed when hit especially with a driver. Maybe yours don't because you hit it like a sissy or a wimp! Or maybe you see those obstacles around the course and you freeze and the wrong ball got compressed.

Obstacles in golf courses just as in life are frightening things that you see when you take your eyes off the target.

Advanced technology is being applied to all and sundry. Golf clubs are not spared. From drivers, woods, hybrids, irons, wedges to putters, many things are happening relentlessly. It is not just like a flowing river but more like flowing on rapids. I was telling people at one point that one day they are going to tell you that by adjusting the studs on their shoes they could fancy playing a better draw or fade just like the club technology and true enough it has happened. Just like people who ask me why don't I change my car to a Beemer or Benz and I used to tell them that I would love to but they don't do hatch backs but now they do I have to think of other excuses because telling them you can't afford it won't work. Let's just say I am waiting for a six-door Beemer. Here was a ball and Beemer related article I posted back then for your reading pleasure:

What about balls? I mean it really takes balls to play right? Everybody know about Titleist's domination with their Pro V 1 and Pro V1x and I would tell them that the only Pro V I use is the Pantene shampoo. Let me introduce you to the TaylorMade Penta.

This may be the world's first five-piece yes 5-piece ball but definitely the first 5 layer Tour ball as you can see the print on the box. It's like Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, VW, Lexus, Jaguar targeting one another market's segment. These are the luxury marques and luxury balls.

What Is Penta?

Penta is the first five-layer Tour ball made to enhance drive, long/mid/short irons and wedge play. It topped Golf Digest to win Best Category in Performance and Feel. It is built to have great feel, better spin around the greens, gives good control, launch and distance. It is suppose to benefit from distance with a driver (core built for low spin/high launch and ball speed), , better launch with long iron (4th layer almost similar to core), provide control for mid-iron (middle layer prevents ballooning), spin for short iron and wedge (outer 2nd layer promotes optimum spin) and finally soft feel for wedge and putter (the top urethane cover delivers soft Tour feel on and around the green). Soft feel for putter is especially valuable.

I have shown such a video before in previous articles but some may have missed it and didn't believe that it is so because our naked eyes won't see this. Ball being squashed, compressed and deformed by a driver hit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y57pw_iWlk

Does this look like you? Next time after hitting, maintain your pose for a camera shot. If you hit and lose your balance, you are out. Practise martial arts stance - 马步

What Ball?

Depending on your proficiency, choose the correct ball for your game. In today's technological advancement, Bridgestone can even give you ball-fitting. You may think this is all bull or no shit and how do they fit you. They will have to measure to find out details on your swing speed, ball speed, launch angle and spin rate and from here on what is suitable for your game.

Newbies need not think except get used balls as you are going to fill up the ponds and jungles. If you play near the sea, you are merely helping to reclaim land. Those who lack distance should just opt for hard balls while those who could achieve distance and wanted more spin for short irons and wedges definitely need to go for soft ones for control, spin and bite for play around the greens while having feel as a crucial requirement when putting.

For your convenience I have pasted the link to my previous article below which will help you to understand that it takes balls to play!

In the meantime, please look at all the top balls of 2010 to consider:

For Better Players

Bridgestone - A popular choice especially the B330-RX Tour as its soft compression helps you with distance. Its inner Ionomer cover increased velocity and has a soft urethane seamless 330 dimples for more consistent flight. For distance and feel. Yes ball-fitting too.

Srixon Z Star - Is a high performance multi-layer ball with low compression and extreme soft feel. It comes with an ultra-thin urethane cover and a new dimple configuration for performance.

Not many is suited to this ball as you need good swing speed maybe from above 100 mph to benefit. More durbale than others.

TaylorMade Penta TP - As explained above. Has LDP (Low Drag Performance) which is for more forgiving behaviour for off-centre hits. Tops for feel and performance.

Titleist Pro V1 / Pro V1x - The most famous Pro V1 ball with three-piece construction. It now comes updated with a larger core for distance and feel. Best for drop, check and stop when landing onto greens. Urethane elastomer cover improved durability while the Pro V1 has four layers and a dual core construction. Provides more consistent ball flight. Tops in short game feel and overall performance.

For Average Players

Bridgestone e6 / e7 - The e6 has enhanced anti-side spin properties to keep your ball straight. Reduces hook and slice too while e7 is designed for lower trajectory and comes in surlyn cover. Noted for feel and performance.

Titleist NXT / NXT Tour - NXT means next generation distance. It has a 332 Icosahedral dimple design for consistent flight resilient ionomer cover for long shots built for extreme distance. NXT Tour is almost like tthe Pro V1 or Pro V1x at a cheaper price point. If you are always doing Pro V and feeling broke but do not wish to miss out on the superior feel, distance, performance and added durability this would be a very good choice. Anyway, you can't spin the ball to bite like the pros so there you have it.

Wilson DX3 Soft - Is designed for distance and soft feel for shot-stopping spin and green side control. Created to engage the club face longer to impart more spin. Has flat and shallow dimples for more penetrating flight.

For High Handicappers

TaylorMade Burner - Inside it has a V-core to promote velocity and faster speed and the ball measures 60 in compression which means is super soft. This is actually a two-piece ball that has benefits of Tour ball even if you can't hit like Tour player. It has a Iothane cover which feels soft and yet is very durable. A very good choice for most golfers to pick. Great value from a price to performance viewpoint. Most golfers should try this!

Other golf balls among the best at value-for-money are:

Noodle Easy Distance - For slower swingers with swing speed of 85 mph or less. Feel is good for this price. Pinnacle Dimension - Good durability and performance for this price. Has 3332 Icosahedral dimple design. Srixon Soft Feel / AD333 - Among the best balls money can buy at this price point and meant for good distance and as the name suggest "soft feel". Top Flite Gamer V2 -An intereseting dimple within a dimple. Versatile and value-for-money. Wilson D25 - Distance ball and some of you will remember their Staff Titanium of old which were so popular.

Just remember - it takes balls to play!

Golf as in life, play as it lies.
