Ping Tour-W Wedge

Ping makes quality golf clubs. The Ping Tour-W wedge is a case in point. The milled face and grooves increase spin and provide great control from all lies. The National Club Golfer commented that this is "widely acknowledged as reliable, well-built and suitable for most ability levels. Easily the most conventionally shaped wedges Ping ever released, the Tour-W will never let you down". This is an "orange" dot which means 2.25 degrees flat.

The World Of Golf: This wedge is designed for players seeking high performance and with versatile options around the green and from the sand. Its machined face and grooves combined with a compact, tear-drop shaped head to improve control from any lie. A tungsten toe weight and small Custom Tuning Port increase moment-of-inertia for forgiveness while enhancing club head feel.

Today's Golfer: It's a bit like Ryan Giggs, around for awhile but still oozes class and always comes up with the goods. It's still better than anything we have tested. Very smooth on impact and really soft - ideal for both better players and game improvers. A real top quality product that should be seriously considered if you are in the market for scoring clubs.

Golf Digest: It has three materials - 17-4 cast stainless steel body, a tungsten weight in the sole for stability and polymer insert in the cavity to better position the centre of gravity low and forward for proper club head manipulation. (High handicap tester): "It's so smooth it's like the sand isn't there. Excellent on thick lies around the green." (Mid-handicap tester): "It's fantastic out of the rough and the distance control is consistent." (Low Handicap tester): "Looks more classic than a Ping. Very nice."

Golf Magazine: Dependable wedges for the serious player. Impressive performer out of the sand. Above average distance control for solid strikes. Misses toward the toe and heel still fly pretty well.

Golfsmith Ratings and Reviews from users: (1) Titleist Vokey - very nice. Cleveland - very nice. Then Ping Tour-W - Easy decision. Balls check like they have hand brakes. (2) Cuts like through butter, I switched from Vokeys. Lots of spin and overall feel is awesome. (3) Awesome! (4) Effective, good feel and touch. Better than some other big names. (5) This wedge with the AWT shaft gives a great feel of the heavy head that allows an ascending blow for good spin. Very nice! (6) Best wedge I've ever hit. Crisp and consistent shots around green. I am sold on these clubs. Ping wedges will always be a part of my arsenal. Get these wedges!!!

Nice chrome work here with a slim top line and if first impression counts then it certainly look fabulous. If the game is based on looks alone, this one is quite a stunner.

It gives you full confidence on set up. It was fitted with a SR steel shaft since you want to favour accuracy above all else and to an orange dot which in Ping-speak is 2.25 degrees flat.

You can see the polymer insert Custom Tuning Port here an an accentuated toe weight. Pretty good muscles here.

I had only a few chances to use it and they turned out quite well. Low chip and run or a higher pitch shot. The weight lets you know where the head is and then you let gravity do the work. It has a nice feel and I believe once you get a hang of it, one can do some serious damage.

There was a particular short par 4 I remembered well as it was a tournament hole for the nearest to the line. I hit a good tee shot power-wise but it was too close to the right and was knocked down by a tree branch. Disappointing. From an undulating ground with the ball below feet, I used a 4 hybrid to try to get closer since it was still quite a long distance away. I hit it flush and it flew quickly, high, long and landed next to the line. No prizes. Now I was left with just slightly more than a 100m. I took the Tour-W and let go with a regular swing. The ball went up high, straight and landed on the green just before the pin and rolled a little but due to its undulation from where I was I could not see it anymore but it looked good.

When I finally got to the green, I didn't bring along the putter as the ball was just less than six inches to the hole. Wow! Can this be repeated? Yes why not? All the time? Depends. It seems a real good spinner. 50 degrees loft comes with a 12 degree bounce angle. Master it and it shall be a great servant. I've got a feeling, just like the Black-Eyed Peas.....
