Magic Messi - Greatest Footballer On Planet Earth

Last time I wrote about why Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer I knew that not everyone would agree but not many would not disagree simply because there are fans of Pele, George Best, Cruyff, Maradona, Zinedine Zidan, Ronaldo, etc. I have also explained that is is so difficult to quantify and qualify as the era, the strategy and speed plus number of games played are different. The link below was the article I wrote in March 2012 which featured the world's best. You must read:

Just like boxing, tennis, squash, badminton, golf - they have their greats, so do soccer. Pele was one of the most complete player strong with his head as well as his feet and both feet and he scored a massive 1282 goals in 1363 matches. These comprised 760 goals in official competitive matches and 522 in friendlis and charity matches. He also lasted a very long time as he took care of himself well and was disciplined. Cruyff was special too but he never won the World Cup. If being special is important, then there is none more special than George Best. He was more than that. He was pure cheeky genius and God's gift but Georgie never even appeared in a World Cup with Northern Ireland. Those who have seen George played sweared that he was the best ever!

Much as some would love Cristiano Ronaldo who is very very good I think he would have been the best now if not for Messi. Ronaldo sulks too much and is full of petulance, even contemptuous. Many may simply say arrogance. So why is Messi the best footballer on planet earth? Even if he does not win the World Cup? Well, yes even if he did not win the World Cup. Not all of sports top players rated the world's best won trophies and titles for the team. Not yet, because Messi is after so many years and records is an old man at still only 25. Argentina is a traditional World Cup power house and currently leading the South America qualifiers and they have many good players who could win the World Cup. These names would be familiar to you - Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Romero, Javier Mascherano, Pablo Zabaleta, Garay, Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero, Fabricio Coloccini, Lavezzi.

Those who believe that the European Champions League might be harder to win than the World Cup are not wrong and Messi has led in scoring for four years in a row being a three-time winner. He is on his way to win a record fourth World Player of the Year award. Nobody has done that before. Last Sunday he wrote a new  chapter in history when he scored his 85th and 86th goals this year in Barcelona's 2-1 win in the La Liga thus breaking Gerd Muller's record set in 1972 with Bayern Munich and Germany.

Above all else, Messi is a humble character. Despite being such an immense individual talent with a ball, he always plays for the team. It is his consistency in excellence and Messi is one of the smallest players around. He is blessed in that he is in a very great team that plays lots of games. I do not remember Messi throwing tantrums or urging referees to show a yellow card to an opponent. He picks himself up when fouled and simply walks away. I never saw him dive for penalties. Maybe that was because he found it easier to score than to act. Messi always play with a smile on his face.

Yes, Messi actually played more games than Muller did in 72, yet Muller's record stood for 40 years! You have to also consider that last month Messi played four matches in different competition in four different countries - a match for Barcelona in the Spanish League, flew to Saudi Arabia for Argentina's friendly, back to Spain for a Barcelona game and then headed to Russia for Champions League match in Moscow. Muller, Maradona or Pele did not have to endure such a punishing schedule. Even when we travel for business and we get tired. What did Messi achieved in these 10 days of gruelling pace? The life was brutal. He bagged six goals.

Those who worship at the temples of Pele and Maradona may not fully agree. For me, Messi would still be the best even if he were playing for Singapore and Tampines Rovers or the Faroe Islands. Messi will get his chances. Argentina is at present in number one position in the South American qualifiers with 20 goals. Messi scored seven of the twenty. 2014 is calling. Messi has everything in his armour and still enjoy his games. I just pray that he does not get hurt. I deduced that he is not the greatest footballer on planet Earth. He is from another planet.
