Best Soccer League In The World!
The best soccer league in the world is the English Premier League! Why? It was clearly evident from last weekend's games. In 8 matches on Saturday there was a flurry and record number of goals - 41 goals in eight matches i.e. equivalent to an average of 5.125 goals a match and that is a new record. Sunday's two matches yielded only two goals so if you add them all up it became 43 goals in 10 matches - an average of 4.3 goals which is still very solid.
I know some of you out there are shouting "kelong" thinking the matches were fixed but that is the beauty of sports as in life - unpredictability. Let me show you the drama of it all where there was so much excitement and pulsating moments all dramatic till the end.
Stoke 3 Sunderland 2
Both teams of almost similar home kits and playing with more craft than art and always not so easy to beat and they churned out 5 goals. Good testimony.
Spurs 2 Bolton 1
Only 3 goals? But there was great drama. Dutchman Rafael van Der Vaart converted a spot kick after a Bolton defended during a goalmouth melee. He converted a second penalty to the same spot but the referee ordered a retake and he missed. It took Kranjcar 90 + 2 minutes to scored the all important winner with no time left. Phew!
Man City 3 WBA 0
Carlos Tevez was red hot scoring a hattrick. All his homesick tantrums seemed to have disappeared. When it was over, WBA sacked Roberto Di Matteo.
Everton 5 Blackpool 3
It is hard to better this right? 8 goal-thriller. Blackpool was trailing then they later led 2-3. Captain Charlie Adams who was not as successful at Ranger is now wanted by top clubs. How did Everton do it? Through Louis Saha who contributed 4 goals and the Goodison Park faithfuls witnessed them coming back from the dead. I saw glimpses of Everton's young Jack Rodwell and if you were to add Arsenal's Jack Wilshere and some others, England still have a promising future.
Newcastle 4 Arsenal 4
I do not know how to make of this. I am a faithful admirer of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger. AT the top level, it is usually very tough to come back from 0-2 down let alone 0-4. If you have a habit of being late, you would have missed two goals within less than 3 minutes. Once Theo Walcott got past you, you will never catch him. Even Fabio Capello was gracious enough to admit that he made a mistake not to have brought Walcott to the World Cup.
Diaby was silly to have been sent off after his attack on Joey Barton. From here on, the Gunner cookie crumbles. In fact, they could have lost. How could you have surrendered and squandered a 4-0 lead? At 3-4, Tiote came on and blasted on volley of a wonder goal.

Wigan 4 Blackburn Rovers 3
What a 7-goal advert!

Wolves 2 Man Utd 1
This is not one of the better Man U team as I have said previously but they remained unbeaten for 29 games since April. Only Arsenal once completed an entire season without tasting defeat. When Nani scored early on, it looked like they will continue that streak. This is a great example that taking the lead does not mean you will win at the end in any sports or in life. What else does it say? The bottom most team beating the leader and ending their unbeaten run. Wow!
Chelsea 0 Liverpool 1
There was added drama with the sale of Torres. Chelsea has not found how to fit him in while Dalglish and Liverpool nullified him with a 3-man defence. Carragher made a superb interception from Torres. This was supposed to be the top game of the week but it was better else where. Why did Chelsea splashed cash? It is the same as asking why the chicken crossed the road - because it has to. Roman Abramovich has the dough and Chelsea is becoming what Southampton used to be known - dad's army. Younger blood is needed and Torres is 27. Torres is a proven goal scorer and has proven himself in the EPL.
If you think that Liverpool may pip you for the fourth spot to European glory then you buy up one of their best players. Next he should get Fabregas from Arsenal then another one each from Man Utd and Tottenham (Gareth Bale?).

Avrant Grant has a tough job. The Hammers are perennial fighters from relegation and just managed to avoid the drop several times but since Wolves did not do them any favours, they have not much time to change their fate. West Ham gave us so many delightful players of stature over so may years they are an academy of producing England's best. They should be protected. They are to England what Farrer Park was to Singapore soccer in the past.
Finally, our very own S-League kicks off this weekend. I hope soccer fans out there will support them. Buy their jerseys and watch them play. My beloved Sengkang aka the Dolphins by affiliation of where I reside in the North-East is now Hougang United and will become more aggressive as the Cheetahs. I am going to get a Hougang United jersey. Got discount or not? The SPL - Singapore Premier League. Any friends wanna watch? Glory glory Hougang United! Do they sell beer? They should put a pub there at the home ground stadium then the drinking crowd may come. Those who drink too much and can't behave will be hooligans and we shall give our police horses who can then ride around clubbing these hooligans and bingo see how passionate of fans are!
