Naked Fish

First of all, I did not know fish can be naked. I knew it only for humans where naked we came and naked we shall go. 

We wanted go somewhere else to eat something different and so we came here. It was a Saturday and unfortunately, the place was booked for a private function.


Fortunately I spotted a family eating outside along the side just outside the restaurant. It was a little warm but okay.

They probably specialised in fish but are like a Han's or Jack's Place kind of joint where you will find other Western favourites as well as local delights. It is located at "The Grassroots Club" in Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 just outside Nanyang Polytechnic.

When I saw that they had oxtail on the menu and stated as their signature dish then of course I have to have that. I used to visit Jack's Place at the UE Square where every Wednesday their oxtail was a sold out during lunch. The Canopy at Marina Bay Golf Club is good too. 

Since you just add a little more for the soup, dessert and coffee, why not? The mushroom soup is a bit too starchy but you can taste the chopped mushroom. You can't compare that with those from a good Italian restaurant.


We need to try their local delights as well so we had a seafood hor fun which was not bad at all.

My oxtail came and the rest is history. It was very good. Those with weaker minds may never touch oxtail because the ox uses it to swat and clean up and also chase away flies. Haha.

I chewed them up and it looked like this. If humans too have tails it will look like that. The servings is a little small or was I hungry?

It is the "naked fish shoppe".

I like the wall mural. I should be back to try others on the menu.

I went to check the pub called "Alan's Choice" pub as I haven't been there a long time. It was too early. It is a pub run by an Englishman who has been here a pretty long time and yes his name is Alan. He is also a very passionate EPL soccer fan. Hope to see him again someday.

Talking about nakedness, some of you might get excited seeing this poster. It seems too suggestive and looked like "Naked Waitresses Serve You" when on closer look it said: "The naked truth about our waitresses is that they only serve you to make you a regular."

Fortunately so. Otherwise it would be "Bad man Begins".

The Kallang Roar! (Part Three)

Back in the good old days, we have four other national teams. Besides the National Team (The Lions), we also have a B team (The Cubs). Then we also competed in the Sultan's Gold Cup fielding a team called Singapore Malays. We have the Singapore Indians playing in the Bardhan Cup and the other being the Singapore Chinese team also competing aga inst Malaysian state teams in the same format and also the Ho Ho Cup triangular among Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. In 1976, Englishman Trevor Hartley became responsible for the Singapore team at age 28. I can't remember which year Singapore beat Malacca 6-2 and Lee Bee Seng was sent off for punching an opponent who must have trampled on him. Here is Bee Seng with Brian Rozario. The Hainanese

The Hainanese are people from Hainan who originated from Hainan Island - the smallest province of China at the Southern most tip. They were originally fishermen from Fujian and Guandong and later settled over there. The Hainanese, part of the Chinese dispora migrated to different South East Asian countries including late comers to Singapore worked in ships as sailors, opened their own coffee shops or restaurants, bakeries or bars and worked as cooks and chefs and others at local hotels.  Hainanese in Singapore made up 7% of the Chinese population. The Hainanese came to Singapore much later than the Hokkiens and Teochews who are already well entrenched in trade and commerce. Originally they also have problems communicating with other dialect groups as their language seems unintelligible to the others but they began to carve out a name for themselves working for wealthy Europeans including as canteen operators for military bases.  Hainanese are especially with food and beverage.
