A Day At The Cinema

We always remember the childhood places dont' we? Places we frequented, visited and places where we have fond memories of. Good photographers with an artistic soul, besides being able to make buildings come alive, will feel that buildings and places and its architecture have their moods and see things in a different light.

In a mundane world, catching a movie is often a delight whether it was in the 70s, 80s, 90s or even right now. 20th Century Fox the name when first hatched must have seemed like a distant future. Even the movies back them that have futuristic themes depicted a chaotic world or a world where cars could fly in say 2012 and we would go wow, so long from now, may be such things are possible. I remembered during the childhood days, there'll be occasions when  a lorry would come to set up a giant screen and start screening free movies in an open space for a few nights.

For the hottest movies in town, we have to go queue for many hours just to try to get tickets and when that failed we have to try advance booking for the movie next week and when the tickets were sold up before your turn, you'll be crazy not to want to book that highly priced circle seat for a princely $2! You get to watch it like business class as you go upstairs and go in through a separate entrance - sikit atas! The experience of going to the movies today is so vastly different. With home theatre system and DVDs, most adults today hardly had a glimpse of a movie in the cinema.

So I took a day off to relive it once in awhile and found a place full of childhood memories. "Coming to a theatre near you" does not seem real to us those days because there were no theatre near you. We had to travel far to go to Orchard or Lido, Cathay or Capitol. Grand old dames especially the Capitol. They are now all housed in a shopping centre.

Before you could get started, you had to incur a car park fee, more if you stay longer to shop and eat.

Then if you get your drinks and pop corns you will be setback even further. I remembered folks back them brought their own melon seeds to peck. Haha.

We had a little time to do "management by walking around" (MBWA). We came across an interesting shop with life size reminders of good vs evil or how good can easily become bad by moving to the dark side.

Bad seems to be extremely powerful. That's because they can do things the good won't.

And the good can seem so small but as the way Yoda speak, "win, you must".

If someone calls you and say you have won a Toyota, please take care to check if it is not a toy Yoda.

There is a canal here and I was told that you may see someone fishing there occasionally, yes, in the heart of the city. I am often captivated by the structures of circular staircases.

Even a newer set here still looked good.

You will find many eateries as you walk across the pavement or even when you are walking through tunnels. Singaporeans are spoiled for such connectivity such that we can live in a underground world.

This was where we were. They made sure they put the money machines here before you got in. Plaza Singapura was one of the places some friends and I used to meet during our teens.

Carls' Junior was here for a while now and I have resisted it and now letting the hair, the gut and everything down, I have to have a go at it. The burger is huge! Even when cut! A few folks have asked me why they would not cut it for you into 3 or 4 pieces but only 2 and then they will give you a plastic knife? I can only think that the burger is so huge and if you were to cut it into 3 or more pieces, it will get very messy as everything will spill out.

The beef is well beefy, tender, juicy, yes delicious and it comes with lots of vegetables. I'll have this burger anytime over others.

We tried chicken from the Chippy happy food. It has a strong taste of what I thought was vinegar. Very good as it was fresh and steamy hot!

There were just so many stalls and shops, we won't have enough time to explore. Now it was time to catch that movie.

The adventures of Tin Tin. To spend family time. I needed a break, to stir my imagination, to feel like a child again. It was a good choice.

A day at the cinema can cost you a fair bit with the ticket prices, food, parking and inevitably shopping. That's how they do it. Oh, how I yearn for the good old days. Give me back the good old days.
