SHINSEN - Build Your Own Bento

There are restaurants and there are restaurants. Then there are Japanese food and more Japanese food. In many restaurants, quite often they are literally telling you what to eat. Just look at the menu and you know what I mean. If they give you a choice, it is usually a very limited one. I used to patronise the one at "Shinsen @ The Sail, 4 Marina Boulevard #01-33 Marina Bay. We were early this time at their other new outlet "SHINSEN" 238 Thomson Road #01-62/62 Novena Square Velocity (next to the sports court outside). As you can see below we were early and hungry.

Plenty of choices to make your day a happy one! Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMxkMy9JvXI, in fact many "Happy Days!"

There's something wrong with the camera, Yim looks younger than me! Help! I need a new camera! Talk to him when you have a chance and like Clint Eastwood, he will make your day.

I like all the presentation here. Good food is not just about the food but also the presentation of the food which is all stylish and sleek here - even for coffee with sugar and milk in test-tube like containers. Any one of you a test tube baby?

There you go, build your own Bento! Pick a main dish and then go for the jugular. The side dishes are wonderful. In today's world, when you can write you own emails, you can pick your own food combo and build your own Bento!

I made an excellent choice of smoked duck (to die for), cold tofu, spinach and chuka wakame (clockwise). The smoked duck means that the duck was smoked during preparation not the Duffy Duck that chomps on cigars. Why spinach? Spinach is good as Popeye would attest!

You can go for the jelly fish too but I prefer seaweed hence chuka wakame for me. Jellyfish actually has no brain and no heart but it stings. Whatever you do, don't be like a jellyfish.

You must have this!! Smoked duck. Please do not swallow or gulp down. Savour it gently. Here's Duffy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW789GNMsws.

I can't figure out what the sauce was with the spinach but it was beautiful. Perfectly blended.

Tofu is always great on any day especially those that taste very fresh and yes cold. Wondtofu!!

Salmon Teriyaki can't be wrong. Omega-3 with a sure-win sauce nicely grilled.

This is the Aha-moment! Wagyu beef in a delicious sauce. Juicy marbled beef oozing out the aroma of a pampered cattle exploding in your mouth. Ah, it lingers. It will whack you.

Tonkatsu (pork). There is something about tonkatsu sauce that I love but they go very well with curry too. I'm always in a dilemma when faced with this. You don't need to be T-Rex to eat this pork pattie.

For the less gruesome, mushrooms anyone?

Well, Shinsen literally means 新鲜 which also means new and fresh. The most important thing in food is that it has to be fresh. That is what Shinshen is all about. The side dishes are delightful. The main dish is good and I love wagyu. Don't believe me, go try it out yourself.
