The Canopy

Singapore is truly a food haven. Just for local content alone, you get Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian foods. And then you have different types of Malay, Indian and Chinese foods. Among the Chinese it is even more diverse - Cantonese, Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka, Heng Hwa and the list goes on.

The Chinese can eat so many kinds of animals, different parts and they could do it in so many styles of fried, steamed, braised, preserved, in soup, sauteed, etc. No wonder the Chinese are animal lovers. Some of us could not survive for long in a Western country because they give you a chunk of meat to cut and munch all over and over again. Even the food in Chinese restaurants in Western countries taste different as they would have been catered to local taste. Of course, each of the countries have some great food but you will agree that perhaps the French and the Italians are the best in the Western world.

No matter how much of a veteran we are or how versatile, we will tend to have our preference. My parents and before them, their parents and my generation tend to prefer Chinese or local food as we were less fortunate as compared to the selection of international foods everywhere today. It is our "soul" food which no ang moh food could match or replace. It has become our palate of sorts.

Well, sometimes I am still willing to try others recommendation including yes - western or modern types of food. So I headed down The Canopy. Not that one at the Marina Bay Golf Club. This one is at the Bishan Park. We came for "brunch". Scanning the menu, I ordered what was a recommended dish and the others were what may have caught my eye.

Eggs Benedict

These are two perfectly poached eggs on English muffins with cooked ham, salad and their signature hollandaise sauce. My son explained to me how difficult it is to prepare these eggs because of the ingredients and the way of doing it. I must say that it is special and very good. This is something I will have again. No problem, most welcome.

Well, fish is always good right and the very thought of a good fish that is prepared expertly can be tantalising. Steamed fish and deep fried fish can be fantastic but pan-seared can be very satisfying. We got ourselves a pan-seared snapper that came served with tomato olive salsa and mashed potato and it was good.

We have the Pork Katsu - pork cutlet served with fries and Japanese black pepper sauce. This brilliantly completes the meal.

This is interesting, tasty and turned out to be an excellent choice.

Will I return. Sure, why not especially if someone is willing to allow me to tag along. It was a good meal. It was not expensive nor was it cheap. It is the Canopy not "lim kopi". I am pleased to have visited and tried the food.
