Delicious

Delicious! What is delicious? Delicious is to be "delightful, pleasing to the senses and taste". In Hong Kong, you will find many famous restaurants and food stalls just like in Singapore. However, Hong Kongers are fastidious with their food. You can walk into any small road side stalls and the dumpling (wanton) noodle will still taste very good because they use fresh and good ingredients. Our forefathers of hawkers were all skilled in what they peddle. They took pride in what they do and sell.

I fear that in the years ahead, we could lose all of our heritage and the good food as the food scene becomes commercialized. I hope that a new generation will take over the baton passed on to them by their parents or that these food hawkers will train some new students who are willing but this is just a wish as a hawker's life is tough.

Talking about delicious, a particular stall and the food they serve came to my mind. We may be spoiled by restaurant food and fine dining but nothing beats getting our comfort food anytime as they appease your palate and they are so easy to eat. So I'll come to this stall at the Tanjong Pagar market aptly named "Delicious".

They will provide your need for a sumptuous meal of Lontong, Mee Siam and Mee Rebus. What is different is that the owners are Chinese selling traditional Malay food.

The Mee Rebus here is lovely. Not overly starchy nor watery but just nice thick and tasty gravy. It is easy to note how far people go to serve their customers. I do not like my food where the cut chili are loaded with lots of chili seeds. Two important ingredients in Mee Rebus are the tiny shrimps for flavour and the cut green chili. I noticed that the stall here actually make an effort to rid the chili seeds.

While the Mee Siam is good too, this time I did the Lontong and while I had done the Mee Rebus countless times, I found the Lontong to be very good. Not only this, they are also sensitive to our different needs so you can have your basic Mee Rebus or Mee Siam but if you were a big eater, you can up size with more noodle.

I congratulate the owners here for a job well done. Keep it up! May success be with them. Keep up the good quality and keep smiling.

Once in awhile, we need to go to a restaurant for a good meal or to celebrate an occasion. This time I had chosen Peach Garden. We went to the one at the Orchid Country Club. They also have a Tze Char stall at the driving range.

We started with the roast pork. They were very well done and one of the better ones anywhere.

Those of you who like may dip it in the mustard. Please keep it to one order even if it feels that resistance is futile.

All good Chinese restaurants worth their salt must have good soups. We tried a few different flavours like this one which was asparagus with scallop.

Silver fish, not the species you may find in some old books is a good choice too.

Spinach was what made Popeye strong and renergized. Get some.

Wasabi prawns are great to have - crunchy and fresh prawns, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside with a balanced wasabi taste.

Warning! Do not over indulge.

Kurobuta Pork. It is highly prized in Japan and from an ancient breed of pig called Black Berkshire. It is considered to be the highest quality pork in the world. It is one of the oldest breeds originating from Reading in England and is known to be preferred by Royalty. Some can be found in Australia.

Kurobuta pork has a rich, sweet flavour and is very delicate in texture and very juicy such that you may not believe that it is pork. This was to me the best dish for the evening. It simply melts in the mouth!

You will really find that you need more! Don't miss it!

Tofu is always delicious and nutritious.

Cod fish has always been a delight for me be it Japanese Gindera with Teriyaki or deep fried, in gravy Chinese-style.

Sometimes, when it rains or you do not know what to eat or simply wanted a change, you can dial a number for food delivery. The usual suspects are delivery for pizza or fast foods. Try this curry from Golden Pillow.

They are delivered in a box and when you opened it up you will find a huge bread in it.

Tear open the bread gently and you will find that pot of gold. Curry wrapped in plastic. You can select from chicken, mutton, etc.

It just makes me wonder how they do it.

If you happen to be at Serabgoon North (where the Pet Walk) is, there is a nearby coffee shop that has a few stalls of fabulous food. One would be this Ipoh Hor Fun stall that gives you choices of mushroom, shredded chicken, fish or fish dumpling. I noticed that they have been added wolf berry to their gravy. Don't forget to ask for their chili.

Another is the stall that peddles pig trotters and fish soup and finally the always well-loved fish ball noodle stall that makes pretty good prawn ball too as seen below.

Eat well!
