Tangs Market

This is quite special in Singapore - our hawkers and food courts. I shall not be telling you how our hawkers evolved and it is definitely a better story than apple pen. Put our hawkers in an air-conditioned environment and it becomes a food court and are managed differently.

In older days, it is difficult to find cheaper foods other than restaurants in Orchard Road or at the airport terminals. Young people like to go to Orchard Road just like for us who were once very young too. As one gets older, you should have less needs and wants. You do not really even want to go to town but when you do at least once in a while, so as to be updated to the rapid changes going around us and not be a mountain tortoise, you still do not to end up buying things but on thing you will need is to eat. Takashimaya has lots of small eateries especially for Japanese food while Scotts where Isetan is has a big food court.

I did not even know that Tangs has a nice one at the basement.

It is nearly Christmas, time for season's greetings and all things nice except that the wonderment and the feeling of excitement of  a child is all but gone. I remembered those days that went where departmental stores like Robinson and Metro sent out their Santa and offered ''Lucky Dips'' for a dollar.

I like to be far from the madding crowd and with leave to clear and when the going gets tough, the tough goes shopping. Not exactly shopping but be a tourist for a day.

I  ascended to the Tangs Market.

Few types of hawker are there to give you a healthy and balance diet. They were born out of necessity. Food courts are not hospitals. The food have to be somewhat sinful to be delightful and it is part of our lifestyle and part of the economy. If you want healthy food, stay home.

It has a bit of Penang style theme and even has a KL hokkien mee stall with some local flavours, etc. Since it is the season to be jolly, we came, we saw and we conquered and we had some jolly good food beginning with a Penang Char Kway Teow. While I know not if he is from Penang, he gave a good 'wok hei' to the kway teow. It is good,

I saw a Sungei Road Laksa signage and just wanted a laksa so we had one. It does not look like the one and only Sungei Road Laksa nor tasted like it but it is good enough.

The fish ball noodle is quite good too.

While lots of people likes to just chomp on chilli padi, I have always preferred the bugger ones. Chilli Padi only ramps up the spiciness level but do not give you a fresh chilli taste and fragrance.

Fish ball noodle is a favourite among Singaporeans wherever you go. it is always popular.

Another favourite is chendol.

We tried a peanut pan cake. They offered a thin and crsipy version.

As for chendol, we do not discriminate. But original chendol is light green.

Regardless of the colour of the chendol, the size of the red beans or the strength of the gula melaka, we pledged ourselves as followers and lovers.

I think I need to come back to Tangs Market - just to eat.

Then I took a train home with walking in between. It is good.
