Simplicity 101

Do you know how difficult it is to keep things simple? Humans beings are complicated that is why the world is in a perpetual mess for their minds are filled with details, unnecessary details. If their minds were to be their home, they will be classified as a hoarder. Never let your life be frittered away by detail. Simplify.

Others are afraid that you know their weaknesses or habits so they hide under a cloak, put on a guise or facade or say things they do not mean as they do not want you to read them. While people can be stupid, they are generally smarter than you thought. They read you. I suppose it is very tiring and stressful to put on a false front or double face everyday. So why don't we just keep things simple?

Have you ever seen someone dressed so simply and yet they look simply so good? Being simple is an art, a high level art. Simplicity is the new cool!

Sri Chinmoy said: ''In the outer life simplicity is beautiful. In the inner life, simplicity is invincible.''

Steve Jobs: ''Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.''

Albert Einstein: ''Everything should be made as simple as possible but not simpler.''

Albert Einstein: ''Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex...it takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.''

Albert Einstein: ''Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.''

Albert Einstein: ''If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.''

Albert Einstein: ''A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add but when there is nothing to take away.''

Jack Welch: ''Don't make the process harder than it is.''

Leonardo Da Vinci: ''Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.''

Albert Einstein: ''Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value.''

Bruce Lee said that "simplicity is the key to brilliance." His art of Jeet Kune Do or The Way of the Intercepting Fist'' is simple, direct to achieve with minimum effort the maximum result. He said it is simple in execution but difficult to explain. He spoke of ''daily decrease and not daily increase''. ''One does not accumulate but eliminate''. He was talking about eliminating non-essentials. "The height of cultivation always runs to simplicity.''

The wisdom of life is to eliminate the non-essentials. Possessions are unnecessary burdens which you have to take care of. The more you have the more you work, the more expensive they are, the more troubles you have to go through. So de-clutter and simplify your life. Be like a sculptor. A sculptor does not add more. He hacks away the non essentials. Patiently, he chisels away then one day a beautiful and magnificent statue/sculpture becomes the end product.

I read an article recently which gave an interesting take on simplicity. It was about a group of Mensa folks at a restaurant. As you know they are the top 2% of the world's most intelligent people - the best brains.

One of them found a little problem, the salt and pepper shakers were containing the wrong ingredients. Pepper was in the salt bottle and vice versa. So they sat down, put on their thinking caps and debated on how to find a solution using whatever resources at hand such as spoons, plates, napkins, etc. and they found a solution after some considerable time. Brimming, one of them called out to the waitress: ''Miss, your salt and pepper bottles are mixed up and we have found a ..." before he could finish his sentence, the waitress got over, switched the caps of both bottles and said: "there you go.''

Then there was the one about the Americans and Russians. The American wanted to develop a pen that could be used to write in space so they would not have problem with the ink and they spent $25 million on the project. The Russians - they just use a pencil.

When you could achieve simplicity, you have reached a very high level. You shall always have clarity in the mind. Your thought process gets quicker. You see through a problem when most do not. You are ahead of your time. You begin to understand why the rest of the world are in limbo. If you are unable to be simple, you could be a torture unto oneself. Simplicity is powerful.

Do not wait for someone to bring you flowers. Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul. And yes, keep it simple.
