Haunted Places

Does haunting happens everywhere?

Oppressive Spirit?

Surely you knew someone, a friend or a relative, here or overseas who has an experience of being pinned down at the chest or choked at the neck or strangled and unable to breathe while they were sleeping. They would have tried to shout or scream but to no effect. Some even saw an apparition above them. Scientific explanation seemed to have suggested that it is not real and could be some physical exhaustion but talk to those who has experienced it. This is obviously an oppressive spirit. There are also oppressive people out there. Which is more fearsome?

Hotels

Then there are those who mentioned that whenever they go into a hotel room, they will knock the door before entering. This is because they have seen some hotel staff doing such things when they were leading their guests to their rooms. This is probably to warn whatever spirits that could be residing inside to take cover as some one worse is coming. Have you stayed in hotel rooms that looked eerie or smell strange? I have even heard that in Japan, a person experienced seeing a female apparition dressed in a kimono in the hotel room before it disappeared into thin air.

The best thing to do when in a hotel room is to say a prayer first. Leave some lights on. Complete darkness in a new location can cause confusion especially when tired from work or over drinking and having to awake suddenly. Your orientation may get affected in an emergency. If you hear a baby crying at night, it probably is. A family may have one around and hotel rooms are porous or you have been watching too much horror movies. Frankly, if you are not strong in this area, stop watching horror movies. It is also not good for children. So just because you saw some one knocking at hotel doors before entering you will do likewise just to be safe? What if it was a signal to say "please attack the second fellow who knocks"? Haha.

Roads

If you drive, you will realise that some roads are accident prone. The authorities would have even put up a sign showing a skull proclaiming it an "accident area" and "Danger!" Are the roads haunted or is it just because the way they were constructed or something to do with lighting?

There was a woman who used to come visit our family with samples of all kinds of cloth and when you fancy something, she will take an order and deliver the cloth to you at her next visit. She came by once in a few months then one day she failed to turn up for many months. On her return she shared that she fell sick for quite some time and related that one night while she was driving somewhere near a cemetery when she had a ghostly encounter. She claimed this ghost flew near and then soared above her car. After that she was so sick for months. Did she really saw something or was she tired from over work?

Howling Dogs

I have previously told you the story of what happened at our old house. It has since been torn down a long time ago. This is roughly the location and between four blocks of houses there was a field with only one tree that looked like this one in the picture. Sometimes, we children could not sleep at night may be due to sugar rush. On one such night, I noticed my family were all sleeping but I heard a lot of dogs running and barking. Just getting myself up a bit would allow me to peer through the window from the bed. From there, I could see four to five dogs barking and going nearer the tree. This was where I once lived when I was a boy but I am not even sure if it were the same tree.

The barking suddenly turned to howling. Have you ever seen a howling dog and the sound it makes? There was nothing there around the tree that was visible. The dogs were staring right at the tree trunk and howling as if they were in great fear. My second experience with howling dogs was up close and personal. My cousin and I were fishing at a fishing pond at night. It was dark and raining. Where we were seated with our rods waiting for bites while shuddering from the cold and the rain, two or three dogs came to a tree very near us and started howling. Watching the dogs howled itself was a frightening experience not to mention what they were howling at. The dogs' fur was actually standing on ends and shivering and the howl was one of crying in great fear.

Flowers And Trees

My Malay friends will vouch on this. Whenever they smell a strong "bunga" (flower) scent, something is close. This is usually from the Frangipani. Frangipani smell followed by smell of rotting meat means the Pontianak is near. I have experienced flower scent at night but no rotten meat so just nature but I got worried when I looked at my Malay friends and freaked out when I see them trembled. That was before any Pontianak came. The Banana tree is famous for housing Pontianak. They said a person can bring out or control the Pontianak by sticking a needle into the tree and threading a red string tied to your bed. I heard this many times when I was young but please do not try it. What happens if the Pontianak does not come but giant red ants come walking a tight rope of a red string? When my nephew was very young, he heard this story and one day his grandmother found the banana tree outside drawn with red crosses all over it. Check out the SPI:

Whistling Ghost?

In a previous high-rise office, a colleague shared with me that there was a ghost in the toilet and this thing would whistle at him some times when he is doing his business. Now this has got to be the most frightening ghost anywhere anytime because he is catching you with your pants down and there is no way you could run. Even if you ran out without your pants and later they found no ghost you would become urban legend not the ghost. Imagine your thing is coming out half way and the fellow whistles. As usual, I consoled him and told him there is no such thing and actually laughed at him.

One day, I got it. It's like golf, don't laugh at others first. I was half way into serious business and then that thing whistled at me. I can tell you it was the sound of a man whistling at you. No way to be any other thing. My courage was affirmed once my pants were up where they should be. I went in to each cubicle and stayed awhile like a toilet inspector and waited then finally found the whistling cane from the last cubicle. It was off and on. While in this cubicle suddenly the same whistling came very near for several times and it was eerie. In the end I concluded that the sound was the howling winds outside that some how penetrated the building and created that bit of sound that sounded exactly like a man whistling. Later I conducted toilet training for the rest and showed them where it came from.

The Camp

There was a NS Reserve Service camp I went to which has a reputation for ghosts and weird stuffs. The instructors warned that we must never left any food stuffs in the barracks or there will be "unwelcome" visitors. Unwelcome visitors could be animals as the camp is on top of a hill and they also warned that no one is allowed to go up to the park near the barracks after 10pm or they will not be responsible for whatever happens. Now the place was indeed eerie and you just do not have a good feeling whenever you were there and those who knew the place would share stories of their encounters - which trees and which points those things had happened. A few instructors even told us to let them know of any trouble as the nearby mosque offered help when needed.

The toilet is like a long house and you have to take some 50 steps down just to get there. It can be quite frightening if you went there alone say late at night when no one else is there where any trickling water became a little loud. While sleeping, you can be awaken by sounds of shouting at 1am or 2am when you hear people shouting "Siam ah!" Later I realised that those were folks who dare not walk down to the toilet so they simply just walked to a nearby bush and let go. Pathetic you may say. "Siam" is hokkien dialect for excuse me, please move aside as some people believe that there are spirits everywhere so better not to pee on things you cannot see. During the second in-camp something happened. One guy was kind of possessed. I was told that he woke up in the morning and started burning some statues placed at some trees and then he went into a trance.

At the very last in-camp, a few of us went up to the park at the top to discover that it was a very beautiful park. Peaceful and serene. May be there were lovers there and the instructors didn't want some guys who may create trouble? Or is there a monster of some scary things from there that might follow you back to the barracks?

The Cemetery

To many people, the cemetery is a scary place. The logic is simple. With so many dead people buried there what do you expect. It is contrary to the truth as I did security work and my experience in a cemetery for months at different times of day from dusk to dawn has been my proof. I never experienced anything and saw nothing. It was the most peaceful place and so quiet in the dead of night that a frangipani fruit that dropped sounded like a person jumping down from a tree in a thud. Perhaps the ghost were out haunting and not at home. To conquer my fears over the unknown, I volunteered to stay a couple of months longer. The fact remains that humans are more dangerous than ghosts. Now to offer you a glimpse of what people are doing in places in Singapore for such stuffs. You can easily find Changi among them.
