Heath Slocum

When Y.E. Yang won the PGA, a great historical feat was recorded. From the elation of such a shocker and hardly having recovered from it, along came a guy called Heath Slocum who brings back memories of David and Goliath sinking a super putt to despatch not just Tiger but three other giants out as losers. Even more admirable was the fact that Slocum ranked 124 our of 125 qualifiers sank it with a 21 footer.

Woods won the Memorial, the Buick, the AT & T National sand Bridgestone and most golfers would gladly exchange anything for a season like that but Tiger Woods is not most golfers. Two heartbreaks in a short span of time may make Tiger feels like he has wasted his life for a good part of this year.

Slocum is considered a short hitter and at 1.73m and 68kg is not much bigger than me. That 21 footer gave him a one stroke win (67/275) over Woods (67/276), Ernie Els (66/276), Padraig Harrington (67/276) and Steve Stricker (69/276). Now he has a cool US$1.35 million sitting in the kitty just like that. While Y.E. Yang was ranked 110th, Slocum was ranked 197th and he had to contend with not one but four giants including Tiger. Surely every underdog has its day.

Keep plugging away as success is just around the corner so don't quit and never give up. Just wait for a turn of a friendly card or a turn to the next page and there before you would be the dawn of a new era!

Here is the Original Poem from the Unknown Author of The Don't Quit Poem:

The Don't Quit presentation is based on a famous poem which was written many years ago. The author of this poem is unknown. Sadly, in recent years a number of people have claimed ownership of the poem and some have even claimed to have written it themselves! Here is the original poem in it's entirety:

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest, if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don't give up though the pace seems slow-- You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than, It seems to a faint and faltering man, Often the struggler has given up, When he might have captured the victor's cup, And he learned too late when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out-- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit-- It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
