KL Traditional Chili Ban Mian

Just before we went to the Fragment Room, we needed to eat and energise so my son recommended this noodle shop just a few doors away. It was a lazy Saturday afternoon but the shop is air-conditioned. We were sightly early so there were not a lot of people. No queue, just sit down, order and wait for your food. It was a really good choice. We ordered our noodles and a couple of side dishes and the first thing that was served was the soup that came with our noodles. I think this is Chinese Spinach soup. Something that my mum used to do every now and then. Recently, there has been a resurgence of spinach soup at various hawker centres. Spinach offers a really refreshing flavour and has a very unique taste and this soup is very good. If I am not wrong they called it "xian cai" or "hin choy" in Cantonese. You could see from here that at this noodle shop, they pick the leaves carefully where every leaves and stalk looks so clean and nice and when paired with the spicy noodles made it an excellent meal all together. This soup is quite heavenly.


There are side dishes you could order to go along.


And choices of what you want in your noodles such as lobster.

Or fishball

and meatball with egg. They are served with lots of crispy ikan billis and shallots. The noodles are springy, of good quality and delicious. You will probably finish the entire bowl in no time. They actually offer choices of ban mee, mee pok and mee kia but I think the ban mee is really good and should not be missed.  

There are also Thai style sauces for your side dishes.

Beware the powerful chili sauce that comes in different level from 1 to 5. Choose wisely and do not try to be a hero. As three is in the middle it is neutral for most. 

The shop name is "KL Traditional Chilli Ban Mee". The place looks clean and is spacious with friendly staff. 

If you have more cash to burn you could go for the abalone version. The use of lard makes all noodle delicious. So it is no different here. You can find them at 476 MacPherson Road and the Fragment Room is at 490. Go check both out. You can thank me later. You are welcome!

The Kallang Roar! (Part Three)

Back in the good old days, we have four other national teams. Besides the National Team (The Lions), we also have a B team (The Cubs). Then we also competed in the Sultan's Gold Cup fielding a team called Singapore Malays. We have the Singapore Indians playing in the Bardhan Cup and the other being the Singapore Chinese team also competing aga inst Malaysian state teams in the same format and also the Ho Ho Cup triangular among Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. In 1976, Englishman Trevor Hartley became responsible for the Singapore team at age 28. The Hainanese

The Hainanese are people from Hainan who originated from Hainan Island - the smallest province of China at the Southern most tip. They were originally fishermen from Fujian and Guandong and later settled over there. The Hainanese, part of the Chinese dispora migrated to different South East Asian countries including late comers to Singapore worked in ships as sailors, opened their own coffee shops or restaurants, bakeries or bars and worked as cooks and chefs and others at local hotels.  Hainanese in Singapore made up 7% of the Chinese population. The Hainanese came to Singapore much later than the Hokkiens and Teochews who are already well entrenched in trade and commerce. Originally they also have problems communicating with other dialect groups as their language seems unintelligible to the others but they began to carve out a name for themselves working for wealthy Europeans including as canteen operators for military bases.  Hainanese are especially with food and beverage.
