Le Chasseur

I have an insatiable curiosity of a man's questing spirit of investigation but am totally aware that curiosity kills the cat. The search for knowledge is limitless and the search for excellence is a relentless pursuit. The hunger for good food insatiable and thirst unquenchable. I do not eat a lot but we either eat to live or live to eat for some. Part of the fun in anything is all about the hunt. Hunting for new golf equipment, hunting tor fishing spots and hunting for good places and good food. In big countries they hunt for animals as well. In ancient times, you are either a hunter or a gatherer. As a hunter, you need to be skilled with bow and arrows as well as riding a horse. If you can't do either, you go out to gather twigs for the fire. Gathering twigs is too boring for me so I hunted and found things and places. This was what I found.

I am a hunter especially for new places and uniquely good food. So since 2018 till the present in 2019, I have hunted and found what I thought is a great place aptly named "Le Chasseur" which is  a French name which sounds like "The Chaser"? and means "The Hunter". It is the best place I have discovered and shall be my "go to" place for really good food. NOt only that, this place is unique.

The owner is Chef Andy Lim (manning counter) who used to owned a restaurant by the same name in Mauritius. Not only is he a chef but this man has green fingers. He has a lotus/lily pond with koi in it and as he chatted with me in Teochew, Mandarin and English while feeding his koi, I noticed I was under the shelter of a vineyard with bunches of grapes hanging. Wow!

This pond has both lotus and  water lily. They do look a little alike but are different. The flatter pads are lilies and the slightly folded ones are from lotus.

Big koi swirl in the pond.

And bees were having a time of their short life. So to bee or not to bee it is really up to you.

Bunches of grapes under the evening sky is a sight to behold.

Added to beauty and serenity of this place.

This place is located in the middle of an industrial estate and is wheel-chair friendly.

They proudly proclaimed that their food is cooked without using MSG, essence, preservatives, pigments and no service charge.  Isn't this good?

The first thing you need to order here the moment you arrive is the claypot rice because they cook everything in it fresh including the rice  and it takes 20 to 30 minutes to be ready to serve.

Based on the number of persons they will tell you how much or what size is needed. I find that it is very good. For those of you who are used to normal rice being used in claypot rice, you need to take note that here they are using the long grain "basmati" rice that is used in nasi bryani. It is a superior rice to standard rice. It is a healthier and more expensive rice. Like people, this rice has a different character.

The ingredients in it are quite generous with a tinge of salted fish. Lots of lup cheong and a good portion of very tender chicken.

Fish are Hong Kong steamed or ...

Teochew steamed and there are other styles.

A very good choice would be the 'ngoh hiang'.

Sambal ladies' finger is another.

They are very good with soups. Like what your mother or wife would make. We tried the salted vegetable-duck soup, water-cress soup and pig stomach soup. They are all very good.

So too the stewed beef.

Even the 'har cheong kai' is different. They are like nuggets.

Since I have first came here, I have visited several more times.

Each time I will order some different types of food but the coffee pork ribs were a wee bit tough to bite.

I think this barbequed cuttlefish is solid.

I have lost the photo of the one special thing you must order. It is the otah omeletteYou will have to finish your meal and end with this - "tau suan". A small bowl like this can satisfy 2 of you.

A mouthful will let you know it is very good as there are lots of bean and just the right touch of starch.

It is rather sweet but 'tau suan' has to be sweet.

They come with marvellous you tiao (dough fritters). Fresh and crispy.

For a sweet and happy ending.

The food list here is quite exhaustive.

It tasted home-cooked to me. It is a great place for good food. The hunter has found The Hunter - Le Chasseur!

Find your way there.

A unique place. Wide variety of food which are mostly good. A touch of home cooked taste. Traditional and yet some with an added twist at reasonable prices. Oh yes, plus a Singaporean favourite - free parking! Enjoy this hidden gem!
