JB Ah Meng

JB Ah Meng. From this name I would just guess that they hailed from JB and the boss is Ah Meng. So if you do not go to JB for JB tze char then JB and Ah Meng have to come to you right? No passports needed, just come over to Geylang Lorong 30. For tourists or the uninitiated, be aware that the odds and even numbers of Geylang Lorongs has great significance in purpose.

I have heard about the place but it was my first visit.

So what is all the rage and fanfare here? Yes, there was a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2016.

Like all other eateries, they have their signature dishes. To savour it all, you will need  to have more people with you. Obviously, their white pepper crab must be good as it is famous. I have a couple of friends who when you show them photos of food like crab and they will go "you better watch what you eat, all these rich food''.

At first, it seems that they are like my mum. When she sees me buying or eating otah, she would go ''why are you always eating otah?'' when the truth is the last time I ate it was like 6 months ago. I am very sure that these well meaning friends would very much love to be eating it with me but for some reasons - health, health reports or otherwife, I mean otherwise, it is the wife and heaven forbids.

Other than white pepper crab, the favourites are the San Lou Bee Hoon, Fried Fish Head and Slated Egg Prawns. White pepper crab is unique because chilli crab and black pepper crab or creamy butter crab while nice can be overpowering whilst white pepper crab especially cooked with Sarawak pepper would surely make it very delicious and fragrant retaining the natural taste of crab meat.

There are many others to select from but deep fried fermented bean pork belly is always a wonderful dish and we have this fairly often at SICC or NSRCC golf clubs.

Even the world famous Michelin 3-Star chef ate here.

Posters adorn the walls.

This is how it looks from the inside.

We started with a simple fried garlic clams or lala and the clams are large and juicy and well coated with garlic and chilli.

The very first time I had this was years ago at a restaurant half way up Genting Highland. These vegetables are from Cameron Highlands and called Cameron Highlands Dragon Vegetables and stir-fry retaining crunchiness.

We sampled a simple pork dish from Kurobuta (black pig) pork.

And I finished off the last molluscs.

JB San Lou Bee Hoon. Ah, perhaps this is the original version. Moist inside but crispy outside  and served like a pancake. There are tiny prawns and some squid inside. Marina Bay Golf Club has this and is called Johor Bee Hoon and is quite good but tasted sweeter.

Early bird catches the worms. Must be back some day for more but I won't want to queue. Must plan an early assault.
