Rui Heng Braised Duck And Kway Chap

Asians are mad people. Sometimes when we gathered in big groups overseas I could her people saying Crazy Asians and those who uttered it are Asians.

In Singapore we love our chicken rice, bak kut teh, laksa, hokkien mee, prawn noodle, satay, chili crab, etc. and even foreigners who visit or live and work here love them too. I would like to add one more food item that is commonly found not just in Singapore but in various Asian cities in Malaysia, Thailand and others as well - the humble ''Kway chap''. I do not know who spelt it a 'chap' when the pronunciation sounds more like 'chup'.

Kway chap has soy based gravy with pork offal (where offal sounds like awful) served with flat rice noodles. Its origin is from the Chinese Teochew. Everybody knows that famous Blanco Court Kway Chap but they are everywhere now since Blanco Court was no more. Just other famous bak chor mee, etc. They splintered and grow into new cells. Funny thing is everyone swear by their own favourite kway chap stall.

But there are two types of people who have since slowed down on their kway and their chap. One are those who have went through colonscopy and saw the clear images of their own large intestine because kway chap has ''tua tng'' which is the large intestines of pigs. You can choose not to have that. The others are those gout victims. They told me kway chap is like instant noodles as in once they whacked them kway chap, the gout pains come instantly.

Today, let me introduce you to a very good kway chap at the Block 703 coffee shop (between Upper Serangoon Road and Hougang AVe 2).  It is called ''Rui Heng Braised Duck and Kway Chap''. The first thing you will notice is there is a continuous long queue and I think they would closed after lunch or when they are sold out even though some say they are opened till 9pm. I have yet to see them from evening those times I was there.

They have very good braised duck with juicy and succulent meat doused with a special and tasty sauce.

Take a look at it for yourself.

And the rest of the typical kway chap ingredients of belly meat, skin, intestines, eggs, fish cake, etc.

And you know what, they serve you a good portion and yet at a reasonable price. I do find that the duck and kway chap here is better than those many others. I do think that we can't live life based on past reputation. If you are a kway chap fan, even if you have been colonialised, er I mean...colonscopied or gouted and gutted. Do give this one a try at your next craving. Be prepared to Q but do not come too often as you will only lengthen my Q.
