What Stars Are Made Of

Image
Slash (bin ...) was here recently. He wanted a picture with me. I obliged. Now watch Slash lick his guitar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOwFkTGndGk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs0C9M5ahvQ&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=SCplsXu1HRk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SbUC-UaAxE&feature=related Slash is actually Saul Hudson a British-born American musician who was ranked by Time Magazine at #2 of the Top Ten Electric Guitar Players of All-Time! He started with a Les Paul together with countless Gibson and Fender Stratocaster. He listens to Aerosmith. Rod Stewart was once a grave digger. How cool is that? Maybe he was singing I Don"t Want to Talk About It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyrf4raknAo . Sure he went through ups and downs and then he sails through it all: " Sailing" was also an absolutely fabulous take: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpbuqh12oj4 . This was around the time Morris A

TV Themes - Police Stories & Westerns

Those who grew up at a time where Western movies, War and Police & Detective stories were the diet were fed on television and in the cinemas with not much to choose from. When you turned to Chinese movies they were all sword-fighting sagas. Television was the main source of entertainment and if you have one at home, you can't complain albeit a very small one. Those were times where many who could not afford one have to find their way to a community centre, sitting on benches to watch TV in the open. From time to time, they may screen some movies in the open on a big screen. Friends in school, siblings or cousins will also talk about the TV series when they met. As there were only very few programmes, you can actually remember the line ups from Mondays to Fridays, then Saturdays and Sundays. You remember the characters in the TV series and at the time the programme came on, you are just too familiar with the catchy and unique Theme song and music of each one. I am very sure t

The Teochews

From a long time ago around the 1800s, Chinese immigrants who spoke Teochew dialects moved to many parts of South East Asia like all other immigrants in search of a better life. Over the span of so many years, many Teochews have since become the most successful groups in their adopted countries so much so that they became more than proportionately represented in top positions of Government or in business and industry. Teochews have been known to have established some of the most successful banks and industry not just in Singapore but in the region and played a major part in helping build new economies. Teochew people tend to have a strong sense of culture and community and have been known to have kept their traditions. It was reported that about 60 per cent of Teochews are living outside China and there are about 25 million in the world. The half a million Teochew in Singapore represents about 20 per cent of the Chinese population here. This is the second largest dialect group he

Japanese Clubs

Before you get too excited, I am not talking about Japanese KTV or Kabuki clubs. Just golf clubs. The Japanese launched a revolution in various industries aided by the Americans after the war and they not only excel in many areas but came out with top notch products that were cheaper, more economical and often come in new and better styles. They have such a reputation that people just trusted the Made in Japan products. There was this guy who came to the doctor for an eye test. The doctor asked that he stood a certain required distance from the reading chart of alphabets from Big As to small z and inverted others. Before the doctor could point to any alphabet, the smart Alec read out: "Made in Japan" and the doctor called off the test and passed him. The Made in Japan was printed in the smallest font right at the bottom of the chart. Well, this article is dedicated to fans of Japanese golf clubs. Today, everything under the sun is "Made in China". The Koreans are

Acts Of God

We have seen the Tsunami that ravaged the world one fateful Boxing Day and the destruction that followed. Earthquakes of even greater intensity than ever before everywhere and getting even closer to home, in and around Indonesia and never before have there been such frequency and the tremors felt more violently. Singapore has been blessed with protection probably by her geographical landscape and position and we have less hardship than many others.  However, this does not mean that we can be perpetually safe and lay enshrouded. For example, the haze that comes each year, the heat wave that sizzles till certain place and open fields caught fire, recent torrential downpour and uprooting of trees due to extraordinary rainfall and strong winds up to 65kph, floods we haven't seen for a long time, killer diseases never seen before, etc. Rainfall can be so rapid that when driving you can't see a thing. No amount of planning, engineering or preparedness could have prevented many of
