There are no hard and fast rules what clubs one should play. It is all very personal. Some golfers look for direction while others prefer distance or feel. Some demand clubs that are harder to play because they are so sharp they wanted playability while others needs all the forgiveness, the more the merrier. Some single handicappers are known to be playing with Game Improvement irons and even Super Game Improvement irons. However, it seems that many golfers are using clubs that are above their ability.
Basically, it would be ideal that you love what you do or love what you have. This way a part of the battle is won. If you love the way your club looks, it gives you confidence especially at address. If they sound and feel good, it provides necessary feedback for a good all round experience just like a good movie. These days, though not all clubs are built for extreme distance, most are. Most are also built with better directional help when not hit on the sweet spot meaning toe hits and heel hits could still go a good distance and directionally. Some brands and models offers all these but yet retains some playability for better golfers. Most brands offers separate models in up to three categories: Super Game Improvement, Game Improvement and Players' irons.
Some clubs may look less attractive in certain ways but once you get past its looks, you find none work better. If you choose purely on looks like a preference for a thin top line, less chunky soles, smaller face and club head with less offset, make sure you have the skills to carry out the tasks required. Finally if your irons are five years or older, it may be time to look out for a new set unless you have been absolutely brilliant with the current lot.
Although I know some retailers, I am just short of asking them to allow me to test all new clubs. An equipment tester. A golf club review specialist. A blogger. A friend. A clear and present helper.
Golf as in life, play as it lies.
