Peng Restaurant and Catering

Image
If you lived in Hougang, Upper Serangoon and even now Sengkang area, if you are a Teochew or a Catholic or all of the above then you must know Ah Peng or Peng Restaurant and Catering Services because they are Teochew, Catholic and in Hougang serving Teochew food to many for many years.  When I got married, the food catered during the day at lunch was Peng's. Over many years, the food and restaurant scene has changed tremendously. You have either very big restaurants at hotels and shopping centres, restaurant chain, foreign franchises or new age wannabes but Peng has been constant in a sea of change. In fact, it is no frills an authentic. For some folks, this is a traditonal favourite. The original Teochew restaurants of old served goose meat. These days they are all mostly braised duck.  Har Cheong Kai or prawn paste chicken are everywhere but at Peng's it is really well done. Fish maw soup here is okay. The one at HK Chef @ Ci Yuan is better. ...

Cobra King F7 - Hybrid

I was looking to re-engineer and bring back my golf life since I have always said "golf as in life, play as it lies". You know the world out there is a loud place. With savvy marketing and relentless advertisement, you are bombarded through all kinds of media to part with your hard-earned pittance of a salary for many as there are just so many needs and wants in life where everyone just wants  your money.  Now you even have facebook or mobile apps and every facet of social media where you are being directed to buy all kinds of things you do not need.  Well, there is good and bad in everything. The good thing is the bots or whatever you may call it are more and more intelligent so you get targeted  and directed ads to you.  For example golf. I have played all kinds of equipment, brands and models of all types of clubs - drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, putters and even shafts to experiment and learn. They are all touted as powerful, long, f...

The World At Their Feet (2018)

I really started following the World Cup only from 1974, the year I joined a soccer crazy secondary school and was beginning to get crazy about playing, watching and following anything soccer. There was like some 44 years ago today. Wow! Unbelievable!  I like the World Cup for its sights and sounds. The colours, the costumes, the drums, horns and bugles. The culture, the different styles of each continent and even the names of players rattled by commentators. It's a beautiful and wonderful world. Except that each World Cup, we get four years older.  1970 It was before the 1974 World Cup where two things happened. Firstly, they showed a documentary in black and white titled "The World At Their Feet" featuring the World Cup of yesteryear including and mainly the 1970 one where Brazil and Pele were the stars. It was in black and white because the footage were from an era where there was only black and white on TV. When I was a very  young child I ...

Penang 17 - Part 3

Image
Penang is lovely this time of the year in December so close to Christmas. Just few weeks before there was a huge storm that flooded certain places. It was windy and very cool. We did not even go to Gurney Drive. Our local Penangites brought us to the best authentic Penang hawkers. To savour the prawn noodles. This is a good place. Penang white curry. We no longer have such coagulated blood no more. Even the wanton noodle was pretty good.  Another day another Penang Char Kway Teow. I may fail my medical when I return home. I wanted to know what the lor mee taste like. Yam cake and chee cheong fun were great breakfast food in the old days back home. We wanted to be at the beach and we went to the ship.  I have been here before in previous trips as it is still a popular place but the food is standard fare. I did not find it special. Just filling the stomach. Ah, finally the Batu Ferringhi beach. ...
