sbcd

Although Korean food is good, I thought it is quite limited. I often stick to Bulgogi beef, chicken, pork, kimchi, bibimbap, etc. until I paid a visit to "sbcd Korean Tofu House". They do not just do tofu but a variety of delicious Korean food. Of course their Soontofu is a specialty. I learned that soon in Korean means soft unlike our local dialect where we may have Soon Soon Porridge or Soon Soon whatever which literally means smooth. I visited this one at Tanjong Pagar Centre. It is a big restaurant that is spacious, airy and clean.

There you go with their philosophy - uplifting and complete meal. The Korean restaurant actually came from the US of A and the restaurant in Korea is called BCD or Buk Chang Dong so sbcd may mean Singapore BCD perhaps.

They even have unagi which I have not tried as I thought this dish is more Japanese but I would probably try it some day. Unagi which is made from eel are actually eaten during summer due to the summer heat as most Japanese do. The Koreans called it Jang-Eo.

There is a good variety for you to explore for many more visits.

I am really impressed by the appetisers or side dishes they serve - kimchi, seaweed, some small pieces of spicy fermented squids and the excellent croaker fish that is so delicious. By now, you will know that you are going to have a very good meal.

Being there for the first time, we ordered without having tried anything before. In other words - blind. This seafood pancake below is a must. You dip it with the bowl of sauce that makes it even more wonderful.

You can see the sauce below with chopped pieces of onions. Do not forget to place an order for their dumpling/gyoza for it is good.

Please also get the Jae Chae or "chap chye" which is actually more tang hoon (glass noodle and no they are not made from glass).

The tofu here is freshly made on a daily basis.

The tofu comes with a spicy stew with several levels of spiciness. Choose wisely. They also have a ham and cheese tofu.

The BBQ short ribs is another must order.

While Bulgogi is good, the BBQ short ribs are better.

The quality is very good if you want a delicious Korean meal here. The prices probably reflect that but there some some items that are quite reasonable like unagi hot stone rice for a quick lunch.

What I really like is that the rice and many dishes are served in hot stone but I am curious as to why Koreans like to use metal chopsticks, plates and bowls. They are heavier and more slippery. They are also flat. Probably it has to do with back in the old days, metal was precious and using metal chopstick s was a status symbol to denote how precious it is. Well, some may even say it is more hygienic.

I have been to large and expensive Korean restaurants but this is one where I shall return to simply because it is really good. Maybe they would upgrade my chopsticks from stainless steel to silver or gold some day.

Last time there was a place called the alphabet bar and after awhile some folks would say see you at the ABC. So this restaurant is called sbcd please do not say meet you at the alphabet restaurant.
