Famous Kitchen

Nowadays, every restaurant has stickers on their glass panels from Trip Advisor or hawkers with newspapers clippings or stickers from Makansutra. It seems like everyone has them so you do not need to look for anything anymore or perhaps you are more curious to try those without. Famous xxxxxx Laksa, Famous xxxxx Beef Noodles, Famous this and Famous that. Famous food written by famous pen - urgh, famous food pen, pen famous.

Add the Michelin Guide, Bib Gourmand, etc. and you even have hawkers who paid a tidy sum for being featured. You know I used to have my Tai Wah Pork Noodle (Bak Chor Mee) and Hill Street Char Kway Teow at Hill Street without much fanfare. Just a slightly earlier lunch and there will be a short queue of 5-8 people, enjoy the food and off I went. Nobody comes from all over Singapore or some part of the world just because they read it in the news or some food guides. Both were already that good if not much better those days. Then Tai Wah moved on to Marina Square and the queue was like 10 people constantly and by the time they went to Crawford it was at least half hour wait and by the time Michelin say shiok it became what? A couple of hours. The advent of social media meant you get even more people joining the crowd. When the crowd gets too big the cooking style changed too whatever the food and where land and rental costs are high, you have to sell more and do it faster.
Sigh. Some bloggers and sites are paying people to write for them as well. Very commercialised.

As for me, I like to find my own place in life. It doesn't matter what. Nothing beats living life on your own terms. Shepherd rather than sheep. Sparrow rather than snail. Hammer than nail. Forest rather than street. I'd rather sail away than gets tied up to the ground. This would give the saddest sound. Original me rather than trying to be someone else. Like the Inca Empire located in Cusco of Peru the "El Condor Pasa" is a song of about the power of freedom and never be oppressed. Imagine the freedom of bird flight as opposed to a snail trudging endlessly on the ground, A hammer with the strength to build versus a nail getting stuck in one place. A forest will grow and expand whereas a street is laid out and trampled upon. I rather be free, be in control of my own destiny, be natural and be real. The power of choice is one of life's greatest gifts! Choose wisely. But of course you can't choose your parents, siblings or children.

And when it comes to food, we are spoilt for choices as always but we have to find our own living and thus find our own food. This time I was led by friends to the "Famous Kitchen".

What is so famous about this kitchen? Is it because they have an open space like a pub beside?

It must have been the food that made them famous like garlic pork.

Or these small and crispy prawns.

The friend who introduced this place and ordered the food has a favourite phrase - 'puay jiu' meaning to go along with your beer or whisky. And if you like chicken.

After a game of golf to proceed here for the 'puay jiu' food was actually quite refreshing.

Such as piping hot flower crab porridge.

Look at the guy's lips here. I know not how to describe it. Pursed lips? It was like he was waiting to put the food into his mouth and never going to let it out ever again.

Simply have the delicious porridge.

Have your crab later.

Flower crabs are sweet tasting.

This is a fabulous food which is a must have. It is unashamedly lard-laced but praise the lard! Must have!

"Puay jiu'' or not these fresh ''See Hum'' or cockles are another must have. They are not the largest type but they are very fresh. The seasoning here is special and is spicy with what I tasted - a hint of vinegar and garlic and served cold.

They have Teochew braised duck too which some may prefer.

And this is the ''jiu" to ''puay'' and wash down  the food.

Lady boss Jenny Foo (far left) who may be Hainanese but speaks Teochew purer than me with a few friends.

Needless to say, they are already famous. Golf groups make their way there too from all over.

I like Famous Kitchen. It is good. Now I am also famous liao.

Make your booking and make your way there.

What I like about this restaurant is that they are different. There are many types of food to try still. Now I am waiting for golf kakis.
