Remembering Bruce Lee

20 July 1973, a hero to  many people young and old suddenly left. Till this day, his legend and spirit remains. Now is the Chinese 7th month. Bruce is back! His memories stay with us forever! I have previously written a seven piece articles on him from memory. It can all be found in this link below. Hungry Ghosts! Where?

Hungry Ghosts! Where? Sounds like a familiar website doesn't it. When  someone is a glutton we call him "'yao kwee'' which means hungry ghost.  This is the time of the year where the Lunar  calendar shows 7th month and where some Chinese believe the Hell gate  is opened and all kinds of ghosts wander about everywhere. I will not bother calling out to anyone on the streets especially at night. They will be too frighten anyway. Do you believe in ghosts? Are there really ghosts?  What were your experiences and  encounters? I can tell you that 99% of the time, people frightened themselves and were mistaken including many stories where "I heard from a friend who heard from a friend who heard it from another friend. It is only authentic if you have first hand experience through sightings, hearing, smelling or sensing. It needs investigation sometimes. If you have your own queer encounters, share it with me. Are they really ghosts? Or spirits or demons? Start a gho

Lola's Cafe

Image
All over Singapore, old shop houses are getting a makeover. The old economy of simplicity are no longer enough as new money pours in. New Western styled restaurants, bars and bistros are sprouting up everywhere? Besides the possibility fighting dementia in the distant future, how are we going to find our childhood memories where a large part of us are no longer in existence?  Are changes in the name of change really good? Search me. Some times, other than old school, I would patronise new joints, Arty farty places. Places where the young goes. So we decided to visit a small cafe and planned to be there earlier because besides being a small place, it is hard to find a parking space for cars. We went to Lola. Lola is probably a name of Spanish origin, meaning strong woman. A type where once she's in your heart she'll be there for a long time, maybe forever. Normally, books and movies would portray Lola as a lady with stunning looks and personality to match. Every time you

Suki-Ya

Image
I have walked past this fairly new place at the Heartland Mall several times and each time at peak dining hours, there have always been a queue. New joints are sprouting out everywhere and sometimes I just wonder how much money people spent on renovation and if they do not make it, another one will take over and do another renovation. Wastage, loss of money so who is making all the money? The landlord and the banks?! Anyway, sometimes we have to support enterprise. I happened to be early that day, no I think I was rather late perhaps so there was no queue. I came to "Suki-Ya"- eat all you can sukiyaki and shabu shabu. Buffets can be nice but be careful of overeating. It is easy. I really like the pot when they poured soup into it. This is like the symbol found inside a bagua, the yin yang symbol. You can choose two types of soup. I chose the laksa gravy and a stronger tasting pork based soup and made a distinct yin yang symbol.

Can England Ever Win The World Cup?

1966 was a long time ago but the legendary names of Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Alan Ball, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst remain etched in our memory. While Brazil was famed for their attacking play, the English were masters of defence. I am writing this article because many of us in Singapore and other Asian countries were brought on English soccer since the good old days of "Star Soccer" from the old First Division and even more so now the huge following of the EPL. Besides, being a former colony, the love of the game and the familiarity of the names of players and how they play comes in a natural bias. England have just recorded one of their worst World Cup results in 2014. What went wrong? Was Roy Hodgson the best coach? England were not wrong here but were wrong in many other areas and for a very long time now and in Roy Hodgson they have the right coach but not necessary the best one. Roy has been to many places and coached and managed successfull

World Cup 2014 - Final Analysis Part One

One solid month was over and four solid years to wait. Copacabana, Christ The Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro and the land of the beautiful game was a world spectacle except that unfortunately Brazil no longer play the game beautiful but congratulations to Germany! Credit too to Argentina for pushing them to the limits and giving them a good contest.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unERy12bwaE (B. Manilow) We fell in love at the Copa, Copacabana. Sports, especially soccer and no other sports unite the world like soccer. Even people who were waging civil war, stopped to take a break to watch the World Cup. Even North Korea reported they were in the 2014 World Cup final after beating many teams. Put all your money on North Korea! Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPPyhs-sI1w Before each live game kicked off, you saw all the players singing their national anthems up close. My observation was that while they do soccer very well, they can't sing to save their lives! Finally, the

The Punggol Settlement

Image
Punggol was once country side. When we were young, we went to some fishing ponds there and we have to walk past some pig farms. You know a pig farm is near because firstly you can smell it and you can hear the noisy pigs. I would describe that whiff as sensational. At times, we would fish at the jetty at Punggol end. Occasionally, on a few special occasions, we had seafood at the Punggol End where Choon Seng and all the rest of the famous seafood names were. All on wooden planks and sheds and by the sea. Those days there were no highways. In fact, there were not even two ways but just one and the only way was to get to the end of Upper Serangoon Road and then onto Punggol Road. The narrow stretch of road that went up and down and surrounded by trees on both sides all the way. The beauty of day was when sunlight shimmers through the canopy of the trees. The dimly lit small bus stops there were perfect settings for horror movies. I have written some articles about it previously:
