Reading Greens

Image
When you read a book, it allows you to imagine, visualize, put a picture in your head, hazard a guess. Some say that reading a book is better than watching a movie. You read till the drama unfolds. There are golfers who could hit a bazooka of a shot for 250m from the tee but then in the next 100m, you need another 3 shots to get onto the green. Worse, you three putted. That's a triple bogey on a par 4. You may have to work on your short game from 100m in and probably also your putting. Other than this, you can make an immediate improvement to your game by reading the greens with appropriate measures. Armed yourself with useful information and prepare for better results. Here's how: Line of Putt You just don't putt to the hole simply because there are undulating and uneven lies with breaks to the left or to the right. Uphill, downhill and those across a slope. You have to putt onto the line that takes your ball to the hole o

David & Goliath

David and Goliath - Faith, Confidence and Distances I grew up reading fairy tales and buried myself with these mystical books of dragons and dungeons, evil crooks and beautiful Princesses borrowed from the National Library. The Prince on white horse always gets to kiss the Princess, save her life and got her hand in marriage. And yes, they lived happily ever after. Looking back, it was kind of cheesy and I soon found out that life is not a bed of roses. The evil witches and baddies in Snow White and the likes actually looked lame in comparison to real life. T here were also those from Aesop's fables and others from Hans Christian Anderson which have a moral in each story. I would also try to get hold of every Enid Blyton books on The Five Find Outers and the Famous Five buying it for $2 and returning it to redeem a dollar at the old Paramount at Serangoon Gardens. Singapore was too dry, too real and too in your face, too humdrum for such adventures you find in these books.

EPL Gameweek 14

I was spot on with the Liverpool v Man City game where I predicted a 2-2 scoreline. I got a correct draw between Burnley and Aston Villa similarly for Hull v West Ham (just didn't expect them to served out a 3-3 goals galore). The highlight must be the Cockerels crowing in that amazing 9-1 win over Wigan . Long-suffering Spurs fans, go ahead and bask in all the glory!!! Game Week 14 Blackburn v Stoke Blackburn won away for the first time in a while and were impressive. Paul Robinson made several key saves and David Dunn was making the all the good runs. Dunn was once the England Under-21 Captain and I saw him scored a virtuoso goal in an U-21 international where he dribbled 4-5 players to score a spectacular goal. Among the poorer teams, Stoke is really one of the better ones. A draw at 2-2 seems possible as both are scoring, Stoke is stronger but they are away. Fulham v Bolton Fulham lost at Birmingham last week and back home now at Craven Cottage they

What's Up Doc?

What's Up Doc? That's the catch phrase of Bugs Bunny! How we miss the Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies! This time of the year can be very busy for everyone and I know some of you are travelling for business of for leisure. There's no time to read the papers and anyway not much good things to read about. Just a same sh*t different day kind of thingy. Let me help you a little by condensing some news for your easy reading... Soccer We have Dollah Kassim still in coma, A. Sivalingam's demise, a very dedicated coach of our Youth Olympics team lost from heart attack while playing soccer for charity. German goalie Robert Enke gone too and now we have top Mexican striker Antonio De Nigris who also died after a heart attack - he was only 31. Brazil beat a depleted England 1-0 in Qatar. Rooney was captain and was full of purpose but the second stringers were no match. Only James Milner gave a glimmer of hope with consistent and clever play. Milner has always been useful

EPL Game Week 13

Sadness lingers as we read about Robert Enke, goalkeeper for Germany's World Cup squad who took his own life after suffering depression after coming back to the top of his game having been voted the best goalie in the Bundesliga last year. Some intestinal infection that made him sick saw him lost his place in Germany's qualifiers for a few games. This is a shocker as Germany mourns the loss. It was reported that he suffered from depression and he also had the tragic loss of his very young daughter previously. Nearer home, we read about a relatively young man who killed himself after murdering his own children. Who are we to judge people when we can be equally gullible and susceptible? How are to say that bad things won't come to us? All the more important it is for us to ram home the message about our state of mind that when troubled can be so dangerous and tragic. I hope that when our casinos open, the floodgates of such profligacy can be binded. Stay strong, come w

EPL Game Week 12

I read that in Taipei, it is now popular for terminally ill people to celebrate their own funeral in advance. Stranger things are happening everyday. Rafa Benitez may have literally just arranged that when Fulham thumped Liverpool 3-1. I told you that Fulham with Roy Hodgson alongside is a good team. I told you I was only biased to pick the Reds to win. Maybe it was injury but I was shocked to watch Philipp Degen playing alongside Sotiros Kyrgiakos, a totally unfamiliar sight. At least Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger would offer stability. Jamie Carragher was again tackling people on the wrong side - Carragher/opponent/ball. Though each time he got the ball, it appeared like infringement as he has become a wee bit slower. The final nail came when once again Rafa took off Yossi Benayoun who is their most creative player. You don't do that unless you are replacing him with Megan Fox to distract your opponents just like how she did it to the Decepticons in Transformers. To make ma
